Both servers are fine and working.

I've just checked both servers via live map, and everything seems to be running fine (it's a good way of checking to see if the server has crashed).
Is your internet connection working ok otherwise?
Sometimes the servers can be a bit "funny" when trying to join them. Often by just trying to join again and again you can get in after a few tries. Other times it's best to give it a few minutes and then try again.
One other thing to try is to check to see if anything on your system / home network is downloading a large file or system update, as if this is eating up most of your internet bandwidth, you will have difficulty logging into the CFUK minecraft servers.
I cant get on atm as well but i think its virgin as even the tv is having a fit.

Virgin media is know to issues with our datacentre.
Downgrading is super easy if you're running Windows 7 (Vista too I believe).
Just go to your start button, type %appdata% in the search box and hit return. Open the .minecraft folder, highlight the bin folder and right click. Select properties from the menu, click the 'Previous Versions' tab, wait while it searches, then select the most recent one from the list before you upgraded and hit Restore. OK out of those boxes and run Minecraft, then don't upgrade when it prompts you.
