Growing Grass?

Notch recently posted this on Twitter:

Well, that worked out better than I thought.. http://i.imgur.com/JUEYD.jpg[/blockquote]

And the link leads to a picture of what looks like sprite grass growing in a wooded area (by sprite I mean grass in the same way that flowers and mushrooms are).

I have no idea if this is something he's hoping to get into 1.6, or just something he was trying out, but, personally, as long as it doesn't degrade the performance noticeably, I suppose it doesn't hurt anyone.

Not sure if there's any crafting recipe's that could be added to use grass, so I guess it would be just cosmetic?

I would like grass. It would be a nice addition to forest scenery.

it looks like he's just added the better grass mod tbh.

i have to admit i'm totally less that impressed with his recent tweets. he's on about floating islands, and despite 70% of the community shouting Aether Mod! (including myself) he's just ignored us and carried on. now he seems to be doing the same with better grass.

To be honest, I don't like things when they are designed by committee. The only major suggestion so far that he's added to the game has been wolves, and they are just a gimmick at this point. Maybe in the future the code can be re-used for NPC helpers that follow you or something. Or maybe villagers. At this point, the wolves don't really help a player more than they hurt them.

I think Notch should finish the game he envisioned (the type of game that he would like to play). So far its turning out great..... or we would all be playing some other game and not having this discussion right now.

^ agreed but am i the only one that can't help but think that notch himself doesn't even know where he wants to take his game?

dont get me wrong, i love what he's created, hell i've played it so long i'm now into the pennies per hour in terms of game value vs hours played. I just cant help but think notch wasn't prepared for minecraft being such a huge success and it's starting to show.

call me a pessimist but i think he's got until roughly July to sort it out if he wants it finished for 11/11/11

It's not going to be finished by 11/11/11 - it's just an excuse to make more money. They're calling it "Gold" (the word they use for complete games) and then will continue adding/updating the game even after that.

So no, it won't be "finished".

Well based on the fact that Notch moved Minecraft into a stage he called Beta just to get people to pay more money (You never raise the price just before christmas for any reason other than to take advantage of the fact people buy more copies around that time. Also there was no difference between Alpha/Beta other than the price), then i would think he would just do the same thing.

He will proberly just claim that the base game is "Finished" even though it will proberly still be just as buggy as it is now. He now seems to have the company mentality that no matter what state the game is in(I.E Buggy), you should set a date and release your product on that date, rather than only releasing it once you are 100% convinced that its as close to perfect as you can get it(I.E Stable).

When it comes to notch integrating mods, i think its a bad idea. It would be far better imo for him to get a mod API (Which he claimed was going to come and was ment to be a major feature of the Beta) working. From what i can tell it doesn't look like we will see a mod API soon.

With a mod API you then could have the ability for mods to be activated/deactivated based on what server you entered, etc. Which i think is a better way to go.

Granted i do think Notch should integrate community ideas, but i think he should give the community tools to make there modding easier first.

Looks as if a snake would be hiding in there or something.

I agree, though i doubt notch would make it optional which would make it better imo(As id turn it off).

I could see that, actually. But I wouldn't be surprised if it was bundled in with the current fast/fancy graphics options. ie: it's on by default, but if you switch to fast graphics, the grass goes away.

Proberly which isn't much of an option, i like the fancy options because without it leaves are not transparent.
