Skyrail 2012: Now Active!

Aconan, Wed May 30 2012, 06:59PM

Ok Welcome to the Skyrail Summer 2012

The Skyrail will be 20 blocks above the ground, and consist of smooth-sandstone blocks. It will have supports, but those are undecided.

We are currently working on the Green line.

In the past the sky rails were made by everyone, not just staff. Before we build this, maybe we should ask people whose builds will be under the rail for permission, since it may cause problems with their builds.

So whats the pale blue line for?
It goes right over my area.
Re: Skyrail 2012: Now Active!
, Thu May 31 2012, 10:25PM

Perhaps a sub-railstation for certain areas that a sky rail would otherwise conflict with?
Re: Skyrail 2012: Now Active!
, Fri Jun 01 2012, 06:16AM

I agree somwhat with daxmen.

I do not want a sky rail going over my Venice plot it's Under the same blue line thats running over jinXii's plot.

Floating skyrails really irk me, I think they look horrible. If it were much lower and built on stilts -heck a monorail! I'd have no problem with it running alongside my plot or even through it.
I understand it's a big undertaking but I'd drop everything and help if I knew it would look good.

I've no problem with a subway being built under my plot either, although I'll admit watching scenery fly by is more interesting.

I was actually planning to build a subway from my venice plot to the old spawn using a similar format as one of my old subway builds on the old>old map. which I'll quote;

16

Finally after spending ages (since we moved to new spawn) I've gone and finished the circle line of the subway.

Each station has it's own tile design to tell it apart as they all looked the same before, the only thing left to do is name the stations which will be applied to the wooden signage you can see hanging down in some of the images below.

11

I've tried to keep the tunnels/stations as discrete as possible but as you can imagine I've had to go under some people's plots luckily the majority of these tunnels were dug before a lot of you moved on top of them though I do apologise if this causes any problems for future builds

Heres a map of all station locations, please note the red tunnel line is not exact just to give a rough out line of where it runs.

1306097684 1602 FT0 Mapppp

Theres 10 stations in all one of which sits under water which I think looks great, I'd say about 70-80% of this build was hand mined until I finally became a donator (totally worth it people, give Broonie a hand), which made the last few stations/tunnel a breeze.

21

Well I don't know whether to extend to other outposts or focus on something new I like the idea of conecting the new towns running the outskirts of the spawn or even building a line to Broonies Arena, we'll see.

Thanks to everybody who's lent me a hand in way of digging, building, materials and trading, especially Sgt_Blinky, Kahr and Waggoner. Cheers

One last thing please don't mine in the tunnels, I spent too long removing ores, dirt and gravel to discourage it, if you do happen to dig into a tunnel by accident please be a sport patch it up with stone and build around it, failing that take it up with a mod to see what can sorted Thankyou.

I also don't like the look of high-floating skyrails.

Having said that, if you build it at y=256 it won't be quite so visible from the ground.

Discharge

Problem is, then you won't be able to see where you are in the world.

In my opinion, I like skyrails more, due to the fact that they dont destroy the land, and its kind of like a CFUK Tradition to have a skyrail line
Re: Skyrail 2012: Now Active!
, Fri Jun 01 2012, 05:47PM

maybe over open sections of ground have it skyrail, so its a good view of the scenary, but when it comes nearer to residential etc maybe drop it to a monorail kinda design like mysterysteve mentioned. so its still above ground and you see the scenary but it doesnt intrude and dominate that skyline too much.

Just a though
Re: Skyrail 2012: Now Active!
dubien, Fri Jun 01 2012, 06:16PM

I like Q's idea. And I like the idea of the skyrail being at 256. You can still see the ground at 256.

Just to confirm, yes this will be a public project, but I just want to hear what everyone wants before we build all over the map.

Bleh, the blue line connects all the lines across the map.

Well it would be their problem for building there really. unless they could find people who are willing to drop the line down so it doesnt interfere

Squippit, Sat Jun 02 2012, 07:25PM

My opinion on skyrails? I like the height they're at. I don't like falling to my death off of them. I don't like the confusion the rails give me for lack of a map. I like the speed they give in travel. I think if rails were moved to the nether for speed and removed from overworld entirely it would be fantastic. But that won't happen unless the community supports it... And then there would be no place to grief and nether portals are... irritating. I personally think if the rails were close to or on the ground they would eventually get in the way of something. And underground rails are kinda boring... so... skyrails are fine as is, I guess...
Re: Skyrail 2012: Now Active!
dubien, Sat Jun 02 2012, 08:22PM

The height they were at before would still make you fall to your death. And you can still see the map @ 256. I agree with the nether part. Building it in the nether would be easier and traveling would be faster. I don't think people use the nether for PVP very often anyway. I agree with Squippit that we should build the rail in the nether.
Re: Skyrail 2012: Now Active!
Hotmage100, Sat Jun 02 2012, 08:59PM

I dont think building a transport system in the nether is good or an option.
1. No one is responsible in the nether.
2. Its boring travelling in the nether, eveythings is red and lava.
3. Its hard to locate other portal unless u have Rei's minimap.
4. Its dangerous / need to cover the whole thing with cobble.

Travelling in the overworld.
1. Great scenery and you can view
other's creation as you travel.
2. Not so dangerous compare to he nether.
3. Someone will be respondsible if there is a grief.
4. Saves materials and building time compare to the nether, need to dig and build walls in the nether.

A. Building it in underground.
1. Boring.
2. Waste of time diging a tunnel.
3. May cause suffocation.

B. Buildin it in the sky.
1. Nice scenery.
2. Less time is needed to complete the track.
3. May fall to death / can't leave the cart in the sky ( if you are careless ).

I'd say skyrail. Its a tradition and a great "tour ride" around the server / along the railways u traveled.
Re: Skyrail 2012: Now Active!
dubien, Sat Jun 02 2012, 09:42PM

Good points hot, but the upside to the nether is faster travel.
Re: Skyrail 2012: Now Active!
paragers, Sat Jun 02 2012, 09:47PM

I have to add that I would prefer a nether system also, only having to build 1/8th (i think) of the distance for each station.

And is there any need to have a place to grief? If people want to pvp there are arenas that people have built for that purpose?
Re: Skyrail 2012: Now Active!
Aconan, Sat Jun 02 2012, 10:39PM

I will say that a nether build is not reasonable. We are not changing the Nether from a PVP zone just for the rail.

The rail is brilliant at showing people what we have to offer in a small amount of relative time. Which is why I favour a sky rail of some form.

It allows people to build along it, and creates strong links between communities on the map.

Have something to show off? you'll find far more people will visit it, if it is connected.

The exact route can change as to preserve peoples builds, no dispute there. But the questions that should be answered, are what materials, what height and how should we go about with diversions.

I was recently looking at the old map, were sky rail was at its' best.

It provided great views of the map and its builds, and was around 90 blocks in the y value.

Sandstone is a nice material, but can anyone think of a better one. I was thinking of wool.

We could also "theme" it and not have it floating.

Heck ideas are welcomed. However I strongly disgree with a nether build. Yes for speed it is great however it will get griefed and the nether is crap.
Re: Skyrail 2012: Now Active!
dubien, Sun Jun 03 2012, 01:36AM

I would personally prefer stone. I don't think wool alone would look good, although we could have a mixture of wool and some other type of material.

Knoparen, Sun Jun 03 2012, 08:04AM

I agree with Aconan a Hotmage100 in their arguments.
A rail system that we had the latest map works best in my opinion.

Mono rail hight line, rather than floating rock.
You get the scenery, and the line will look (realistic) rather than stupidly high up.
Re: Skyrail 2012: Now Active!
Aconan, Mon Jun 11 2012, 01:48PM

Currently we are working on the underground system around spawn, the skyrail will be able to start soon.

I believe a track 20-30 blocks above y=64 will do, with the occasional support.

Not sure if we should use wool, so the red line is actually red.

Just an idea.

Glass perhaps? (cant remember if rails can be layed down on glass xD)
Re: Skyrail 2012: Now Active!

Actually using wool and colour coding the lines sounds like a good idea. You can then correspend to where each line goes via the pic u made up aco.
Re: Skyrail 2012: Now Active!
Discharge, Tue Jun 12 2012, 06:01AM

Maybe sky blue wool so it is camouflaged from the ground.
Re: Skyrail 2012: Now Active!
ninjanpirate, Tue Jun 12 2012, 01:23PM

I think making it solid out of wool wouldn't look too nice, perhaps replace every 8th block in the line with the coloured wool?
Re: Skyrail 2012: Now Active!
, Wed Jun 13 2012, 12:42PM

london underground styling for the under ground? then differnt coloured wool for different lines? if the rails will be supplied, fual line system incase of someone traveling. signal system? tongue

The Skyrail will be 20 blocks above the ground, and consist of smooth-sandstone blocks. It will have supports, but those are undecided.

We are currently working on the Green line.

Aconan

Do you have an x and z co-ord for the vertical green line, as that literally goes right past/over my doorstep so I could that section done so that its "integrated" with my area?
Re: Skyrail 2012: Now Active!
, Wed Jun 20 2012, 09:39AM

hehe nice job
Re: Skyrail 2012: Now Active!
Soul_UK, Wed Jun 20 2012, 02:09PM

I did build a skyrail that you could use to view other's builds, but after a while I decided to take it down as I thought other's might not like the look of it from their build. It was around 20 blocks high and had no supports (to stop spiders climbing onto it). I only have a small section to dismantle now from my house, but it's not near other builds so I'm in no rush.

I'm happy to help with the community build ... unless we are going to be upgrading the server again soon (due to new updates out sometime). I'm only reluctant as it took me aaaaaages to mine enough iron, gold, redstone, and wood to make all the rails and power rails I have - I'd rather carry them through to the new server (if and when there is one).

Personally, I like the idea of low-level (above ground) sky-rails as it gives you a good view of the scenery, and you should be able to jump off anywhere without hurting yourself too much smile
Re: Skyrail 2012: Now Active!
Aconan, Sun Jul 08 2012, 02:37PM

The rail from oldspawn to newspawn is now 100% powered and lit, stations are still to be built along with "supports" but feel free to use it now.
