Public Library Open - Diamonds paid for submissions!

BennyFingers, Tue Sep 25 2012, 01:22PM

Hi! I built a public library at spawn and now its partially open.

Players can drop by and pick up a free book and quill, then if they return it with a story written (minimum ten pages) I will give them a diamond.

Alternatively, you can browse books people have written and have a read. There's not much choice at the moment, just the one book - BennyFinger's opus The Fat Grocers ("...the 50 Shades of Grey of Minecraft books." - The_Poots) but with a bit of help, that will change.

The public library is located opposite the Sausage on a Fork statue in Tortoisetown.

Meh might as well write you three books

Do it, you won't regret it!

Also, thanks to Megabanafrog and Tetsuoken1234 the library is now busting at the seams with a whole 3 books to choose from - 2 more than I ever thought possible.

Literature is fun!

Yeah why not, love to write short stories.

I'll write a book. Maybe several. This is a good idea!

I might pitch in with the odd Q novel. you may want to keep them away from most other things though they tend to spontaniously combust now and again.

As of today the library has 6 whole books!

Thanks to Changyeo and Bobbleheadman2 for their installments in what I hope is going to be a long episodal work about Redstone Steve, a flawed anti-hero with echoes of Melville's Ahab.

Thanks also to The_Poots who turned in a thought-provoking meditation on life as a tortoise in a Bronte-esque pastiche.

Can't wait to read more submissions!

Can text be copied into these books? I can't be arsed writing in the books, I'd rather use word. If so, I may contribute a few should I get the time.
Re: Public Library Open - Diamonds paid for submissions!
dubien, Wed Sep 26 2012, 07:48PM

Yea ninja, you can type it into a words document and copy and paste. It will only copy and paste up to one page though, you can't copy and paste the whole thing at once.

Folks, the library has officially gone nuts! Who would have suspected the denizens of Tortoisetown were sitting on such literary skill and fervent imagination?

Thanks to ToaOfSpace for the punchy (i.e. short) cautionary tale of Max and his illuminating auto-biography too.

Draze84's The Meaning is a perceptive investigation into the nature of the universe, right up there with Hawking's Brief History of Time, perfect for those who like their fiction 'non'. Which isn't to say his creative chops are in any way lacking, read the first chapter of Life of Norae if you're in any doubt - it comes with a first class recommendation from asst. librarian The_Poots.

Dubien necessitated the introduction of a new chest, "Experimental Fiction" for his transcription of the collaborative effort Five Word Story. Joycean in scope it's a celebration of language in its purest form.

But my favourite submission so far is Study of Chicken, also by Dubien. Entertaining and informative by equal measure, Dubien shines an unflinching light on the secret lives of these most mis-understood of creatures.

Thankyou to everyone who has written books, please keep them coming.

One more thing, the horror section now has an inhabitant, my own A Ghastly Murder. Be warned, it will make you poo in your pants.

Goodness. As of my last count the library now has 33 books in it. 33. Thirty three. That's a silly number for an imaginary library. And a wonderful number too.

I will read all submissions, but there's a bit of backlog now! here's a few highlights from recent submissions:

Adrenalynn bolstered the non-fiction section with her textbook Villager Guide. It ably demystifyies our droop-snooted co-inhabitants and their curious ways.

KSFunnell debuted her ambitious, sprawling fantasy epic Premeture Falls, the first part of four we hear. We'll be open the library at midnight for the release of part two and space will be made available if you want to camp out.

Changyeo followed up Quest, Redstone with the equally impressive Quest, Diamond. Redstone Steve continues to misunderstand the basic concepts of the Minecraft world.

The_Poots put a different spin on things with her puzzling poser, Guess the Film. The concept is simple but brilliant, in her book she describes the beginning of a movie. Do you recognise it?

Finally, I felt sorry for the empty Romance chest so I wrote what I consider to be the most romantic story ever written. Derek's End has been described as Romeo and Juliet on Acid by literally no-one.

A few things have gone missing from the library so I've locked it down for the time being.

At the moment there's rarely any regulars on the survival server so its kind of hard to keep people's books safe.

If and when people return to the survival server I'll try to work out some system to better protect your books whilst still letting trusted people read them.

Maybe can the mods help with chest log? Could be hard though since a lot of people took books out or placed them in.

i got a plan: you write a bunch of books made as "library cards" to players who want to take a book which then will be put in the chest with their name so you can keep track who hasnt returned a book yet. or just use 1 book that stays unpublished with the names so u can keep changing it.
