Security Warning - minecraftforum.net

Soul_UK, Thu Nov 01 2012, 08:42PM

Whilst trying to visit minecraftforum.net on my Nexus 7 tablet, I was given the following warning report - http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site=http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1067826-is-minecraft-compatible-with-windows-8/&hl=en

If you use this website, please ensure you have a decent virus checker installed, and that it is up-to-date. Alternatively, avoid the website. This is not a hoax.

The site is still perfectly fine and safe. All that happened was an advertiser snuck in a "bad" advert. Which has now been removed.

I blocked their advert provider using the Windows Hosts file ages ago as it slowed down the page loading times which annoyed me enough to disable them.

I don't block adverts normally. That provider was the exception.

Just need to add the following to your hosts file ( Located in Windows\System32\drivers\etc\ )

127.0.0.1 adserver.adtechus.com
127.0.0.1 adtechus.com

Stucuk's Hosts file

90% of its just bad advertisers, same with this case.

Sorry, I didn't mention that it was the adverts as I thought it was obvious from the security report I linked to (which stated there were no dangerous files hosted by minecraftforum.net). It's one of the reasons I don't have adverts on my own websites.

Personally I find that with IE the best solution is to put the ad-provider domain in "restricted sites". This doesn't actually block visiting the site but prevents the kind of deep redirects that the malware uses.
