thanks for the redstone lesson in piston doors.
it was a good vid where you can clearly see what you are doing and you also explain what everything does pretty well.
if you post more of these i might get that tiny little bit closer to blinky the redstone warlock:P

It's pretty good, though I tend not to read text on videos. That's an entirely personal thing though =)

Love it!

As a thought, perhaps a combination of simpler text and voiceover? e.g. when you describe the 4x4 and 3x3 that would be good as text, the redstone passes to the block above &c.

I'm sure if you wrote a short script then someone here would volunteer to voice them if you don't fancy doing it yourself?

Good video. nice and simple and explains it well. Its alot clearer then alot of videos out there for the same device.

As schiz said a voice over might be good aswell, but no harm in putting both up.

Thanks for the feedback.

If i implemented a voice over the "script" would be nearly the same as the current text. The Minecraft Info website was designed to be a no-nonsense website which gives you "Simple and Straight to the point" (TM) information(Compaired to sites like MinecraftWiki which gives you an essay to read with only a few key bits of info in it). So the video tutorials would follow suit.

Ill proberly have to run it through Windows Movie Maker twice (I know its limited. But its free and doesn't want to install toolbars and other spyware on my pc... well it comes with windows, it may spy on me).

Good, but try play around with it and make it more compact smile

You could make it 2 blocks shorter width wise. Though i think the current way is easier to follow for beginners. Basically you would put redstone below the 2 wooden planks that you see from the start(And not placing the 4 corner redstones), allowing both sides to be 1 block shorter.

I think you can make it even more compact. well... atleast in my brain it works...
Re: Stucuk's Tutorial Videos - Your thoughts?

I don't see how. Also what i said about making it more compact is a bit wrong(I forgot about the invertion which makes it not work). You can't make it smaller than 8 wide unless you increase the depth (Having the redstone which activates the pistons to the side of them instead of behind them. I think they accept input from the sides. Every way of making it less wide that i can think of always increases its size in another direction. I personally think the design i picked strikes a good balance between being easy to make and being compact. It can also be easily modified to have 14 of pistons (By using half slabs at the sides to bring the power up to them).

i'll upload a video on how to make it more compact if you want to see it? smile
Re: Stucuk's Tutorial Videos - Your thoughts?

Unless you change it so its only a single door then you can't make it more compact then i already stated above. But that would be a completely different design.

In any case its kinda off topic.

well mine is 4*3 and 3*1 holes on each side while yours is 4*5 and 3*3 smile

oops nevermind.. tongue i almost made a copy of yours... so yes, i think you're right... can't make it more compact tongue
sorry 'bout that smile

Heh. The holes have "padding" to make it easier to see what your doing.

I think the vid is great - it simple, short, and get's to the point a.s.a.p. I've tried to watch too many video's on youtube on this subject in the past and just gave up and closed them because they go on, and on, and on! - It's a door!!!

The basic rule of video's is KISS = Keep It Simple, Stupid!

I love how simple and easy it is to watch with the nice music in the background. cheesey

I liked the video, it's very clear on what you're doing. However, I usually don't watch tutorial videos that ONLY have text. Add a voiceover and shorter text like other people said. smile

I have uploaded an updated version which has my voice on it(First post in this thread has been updated). Iv also made it public this time.

For anyone wanting to use Windows Movie Maker you have to first make the video with the music and save it. Then you need to import that into a new project and add your voice. To keep the same quality as the first video you can use FFMPEG to merge the video of the first with the audio of the second.

Sample FFMPEG command:

ffmpeg.exe -i "C:\Videos\PistonDoor.wmv" -i "C:\Videos\PistonDoor_Voice.wmv" -map 0:1 -map 1:0 -vcodec copy -acodec copy "C:\Videos\PistonDoor_Final.wmv"

I believe the way I make pistons doors is slightly more compact, I'll make a video once I have my new computer after Christmas if you wan't to see
Re: Stucuk's Tutorial Videos - Your thoughts?

Like i have said above, you can only make it more compact if you extend in another direction. The point of the video isn't to make the most compact design but to show people how to make a Piston Door which is easy to make.

I think this is exactly the right thing to have done. I think people should stop moaning about it. Understanding how the mechanism works is a much better thing to have than just the knowledge of the blueprint. Teach a man to fish and all that...

Good stuff.

Uploaded my second tutorial(Redstone Basics - Power Sources). Its aimed at people who have never done any redstone stuff. The next one (Redstone Basics - Wiring) however should be useful for beginners and non-beginners.

Is there anything in particular that you would like a tutorial on? Im currently planning the next one to be about the different types of Redstone Gates (Showing how to make them and what they do).

No one have any ideas? (I havn't run out of my own ideas yet, though id prefer to make ones which people are interested in)

redstone gates would be good to see imo
Re: Stucuk's Tutorial Videos - Your thoughts?

Iv just finished uploading it. It doesn't include XOR gates as i couldn't work out how to do it in a simple to follow way.

Sorry for the delay, on 21st December i got the flu. Which prevented me from creating more videos. I still sound a bit "clogged up" in this video.
