small bit of snow here but enough to form ice when trampled and to slip on.. which happened to me
Re: SNOW!!
Soul_UK, Fri Jan 18 2013, 10:25PM

On Tuesday I woke up to 3 inches of snow, and then at lunchtime we had another 2 inches lay in about 30 minutes. Was quite annoying as I was at work and had spent 3 hours clearing snow from pathways, in front of our hangars etc. (first thing in the morning - I start work at 6am) ... so after the fall at lunchtime, I had to go out and do it again.

The next day at work (wednesday) it was -11 degrees Celcius when I got to work. Well, when I eventually got to work, as my car doors were frozen shut and the drivers door lock had frozen up completely! Took 20 mins with the heaters on full before I could open the door! (managed to get the passenger door open ... eventually).

I'm a Helicopter Engineer, and we fly people out to the oil rigs in the North Sea. (Southern North Sea to be precise ... for my base).

And Q - your car is FWD not RWD - so you can't drift in the snow tongue

Soul_UK

Ahh so naive. you can drift FF type cars its just bloody difficult to and doesn't last long (litterally talking a few seconds), but it is just do able. just kick the back end out and see how long you can hold it.
So thats what i was doing, kicking the back end out (by some serious oversteer caused by the snow) and quickly countersteering which allowed the back end to kick out for a few seconds

Defanition here: Drifting is a driving technique where the driver intentionally oversteers, causing loss of traction in the rear wheels, while maintaining control from entry to exit of a corner. A car is drifting when the rear slip angle is greater than the front slip angle, to such an extent that often the front wheels are pointing in the opposite direction to the turn (e.g. car is turning left, wheels are pointed right or vice versa).

Re: SNOW!!
Aconan, Tue Jan 22 2013, 09:25PM

I remember my first driving lesson was my Driving Instructor getting me to drift around an iced over car-park.

And randomly he would put the hand brake on just for the hell of it whilst driving.

With the handbrake, you can do some drifting in a FWD car. However, it's best to do it on ice, unless you want to wear out your tires and handbrake faster then normal.

And a reminder to find a nice clear space to do it. Like a private car-park.

Re: SNOW!!

Crazy-Fools.co.uk does not recommend drifting your car, the views of the staff are their individual views, and if you wish to blame someone for why your car is totaled, blame them. Please note that drifting (or related acts) in public car parks can also get you into trouble under Dangerous and Careless Driving, feel free to forward your fines onto them

Re: SNOW!!

*whistles casually*

Well actually im not forcing anyone to do it, if you are silly enough to get caught doing it well it was your choice to do it and you got caught so not my fault wink
Yes it is against the law and im not saying go break the law because its fun, just be careful and use your brain (so don't do it in a carpark with loads of other cars and lots of people about. And try not to do it too many times consecutavly).

But the practise is a nessesity really because if you begin to oversteer due to snow you will know how to deal with it, thats why i did recommend it.

Thats my health and safety advise for the day tongue

However, as my post suggested, you may do so on "PRIVATE" land. Any land that the public doesn't have access to, and is not a workplace is exempt from most driving laws. Your insurance is another matter.

Aconan is also another candidate to send all fee's too tongue
Re: SNOW!!
Soul_UK, Wed Jan 23 2013, 08:52PM

OK, basically (regarding the driving stuff) ... as Aco said, you can only "legally" do this on land to which the public has no access. Otherwise you may be subject to a section 59 prosecution, whereby the police have the power to immediately take charge of your vehicle, charge you a fine and storage fees (charged by the day), and after a week, crush your car.

I used to play about in the snow and ice on my work's car park - because I worked night shift and we had a big open-plan car park for 250 cars (and there was only 12 of us at work at night). Thus not much to hit. However, as the land is "private", if I did have an accident, my car insurance would not cover any of it (even if someone where to hit my car).

Thus be very careful about what you do and where - the police are very tetchy about this kind of driving these days and tend to throw the book at you.

Fines can also be send to Soul smile
Re: SNOW!!
Soul_UK, Thu Jan 24 2013, 07:17PM

Yup - fines can be sent in the post too (i.e. if caught on a CCTV camera). If they feel it's appropriate, a section 59 order can still be issued, and they can come and "collect" your car if it was clearly identified.

I run a responsible car owners & modifying club, so I'm very well versed on the rules (unfortunately - due to the occasional member trying to entice people to break the law). I understand it's good fun to mess around in your car on the snow & ice, but I just like to remind people of what they could face legally (as if it comes to it, it can cost you more than your car).

Play safe people smile

Re: SNOW!!
Soul_UK, Sun Feb 03 2013, 01:05AM

Yeah me too - I was doing 10mph down my road, which was covered in snow with lumpy ice underneath ... I must have driven over a lump of ice as the back end of my car slid out and smacked the rear wheel into the hidden kurb ... Now that's a bit too slippery!
