Offering free armor/weapons

I have a little stall at the spawn of Vanilla MC selling stuff. I had a chest with free armor and bows (All rubbish mob drops) that I was giving away but apparently un-linked players were taking them and the MOD Michael_Scott removed the chest and asked me not to offer the items as apparently it was against the rules although in reading the rules page I don't see this particular rule.

Now if it is a rule I am happy to follow it but to be honest find this to be unenforceable, plenty of people offer stuff to new users and there is no obvious/easy way to know if the user is unlinked or not and TBH you don't even think about that when your helping a new guy out.

In any case can they actually do anything with the weapons? Shouldn't the server be restricting them, could it be made so unlinked players can't open chests or that lockette could have a [linked] flag to allow linked players to open a chest but not everyone Maybe this would solve the problem?

I would like to put my free stuff back but obviously don't want to cause a problem.

I think it's under spawn rules really ( since unlinked players only really wander round spawn before linking) its mainly because , if for example there was just an way to acess chest full of weapons , some not so honest newbies could easily grab themselves some weapons and start hitting people all over the show , Which would suck (could also just logg off with the people's stuff aswell) , maybe if we get some sort of tag system so only [Vip] up could open it might work , but for the moment free weapons at spawn isn't the best of ideas (now you know why right?) pvpers taking swords from donations chests has happened in the past before so the rule will continue to be enforced . Sorry for any inconvenience .

This matter has been discussed before in the past, where it was voted against by the majority of the server staff for the reasons mentioned by Freddyfrog:

Don't really have much to say about the matter, seeing as I haven't been part of the "active roster" for a loooong time, just remembered that this conversation has been had before and figured I'd pop in and link it smile

The reason why linked players can get the weapons etc is due to the fact that most griefers can't be arsed actually linking and just log off.

The ones that link are either normal players or griefers that are in the short/long game.
It almost 1/2's the amount of potential griefers we get on the server.

Now if an unlinked griefer suddenly had access to weapons and armor... would said player log off because he couldn't do anything? nope he go right ahead and start whacking everything and anything.

That is the reason why we only freely offer food to unlinked players. it's harder to kill something using a very formidable looking carrot.

Sorry dude. but if they want weapons and armor, they have to link. simple as that.

Items are given to un-linked/new members yes.

Weapons and tools are forbidden to be given though. It doesn't matter if you see others doing it, doesn't make it right.

The reason we have this rule in place is so it's not so easy to join a server and cause trouble. And if you give a trouble maker a full set of armour, it's going to make them harder to defend against and they're going to be able to carry on making trouble for longer (if in the event a member of staff isn't online at the time).

Now you make be thinking "oh but you can just ban them and be done, and if they have done damage it can be reverted". Yes and no. The reason we try and kill them is to try and reclaim anything they may have taken from any players. Just banning will result in the loss of these items.

If you want to keep your chest then it'll then be up to you to compensate these items in the future.

And yes damage to buildings can be rolled back, but only if there's a lot of it. The reason for this is because it's not a small task for the server to handle.

This is why we have this rule. It very quickly lessens the number the will try to do this as they quickly realise they have to work for their tools in order to do this.

I used to have a sticky post up somewhere about dealing with un-linked players (basically, don't give them anything except food) ... but it seems to have moved somewhere / been deleted.

It was agreed with by a lot of members due to the number of griefers coming on and being given armour, weapons and tools by well-meaning members who just were trying to help a new player. This unfortunately led to lots of damage to properties and attacks on players. Therefore, it was agreed that un-linked players should not be given anything except food.

Please note, that if you are trying to find out if a player is linked or not, you may have to ask them to prove it by logging out and back in again. This is because a player can log-in as unlinked, but then link their account without any notification in the chat window ... so by logging out and back in, it will then show them as linked, rather than them just saying they are wink

You don't need them to relog. Just type /statistics, it'll show how many unlined players are online... Or just type /list or /who...

And its not just unlinked players who you shouldn't just give weapons/tools to. any recently linked or new players.

If you want a basis on this, for those less then 2 hours old I would say avoid giving stuff to them, as in 2 hours you can easily get such tools together anyway.
