[poll] FTB reset and update

Due to the following reasons i have posted this poll.

#1 - Update means a lot of players can't access the server

#2 - I'm seeing a LOT of abandoned bases with machines running. I've shut down a lot of them but there may be more.

#3 - some players have noted that they may be interested if everyone starts on an even footing.

#4 - nether, twilight and the end are rather well... trashed and heavily looted.

#5 - it's getting very laggy, probably due to #2

This is entirely subject to Broonies final say however the poll will give an indication of whether it needs done or not.

I'm posting this up until the 1st of March so there's plenty of time for a decision.

If you select "new modpack" a few things to keep in mind.

#1 - post a response with what modpack you would like to see.
#2 - FTB horizon being the closest to what we have now is extremely buggy due to it being beta.
#3 - most of the other mods are posted but being updated so slowly that bugs are persistant for months.

I'm going to say yes on this one.. but I would really like if we could at least use the new launcher cause I can't use this one on my mac.. (booting windows on macbook pro is causing huge performance loss due to poor cooling control etc etc..).
As for mod packs, I'm satisfied with what we already have..
Would be kinda nice to start from scratch.. smile

I can't vote yes/no/mod pack because:
If Yes, I'd like to be able to transfer a few things from the current world to the new world (BEEEEEEES!).
No if I can't keep the bees frown
I would pick a new mod pack if I could be bothered to test any that people recommend that has a good update track record.

Depending on what the update does there's a possibility for a "world shift" as we've previously done in vanilla before. then old world removed after things have moved over. But again that's up to bossman and the results of this poll.

If there should be any point of updating I would say going up to minecraft 1.6.4. And as far as I see there is maybe 3 packs in FTB that could work; Tech World 2, Horizons and Direwolf20.
Any other packs that maybe suitable?

not really. DW, Horizon and Unleashed/unhinged are the main ones. the rest are usually fan mods or "hey this would be cool" but really turns out to be kinda meh" mods.

I've tested out all of the other mods and so far the only ones that appeal are Unleashed, Dw20 and Horizon. Horizon being at the top of the list.

Unfortunately i would not pick horizon due to its massive selection of juicy prime cut mod bugs.

I would defo like to see a new mod pack, maybe tech world 2 as I am much more in to the tech side than the magic side, but at least one of the MC 1.6.4 versions. Horizons looks nice as well.

If you filter the modpacks in the FTB launcher after 1.6.4 and Mod pack origin FTB you get 6 packs that meed the requirements.
- Direwolf20
- Horizons
- Tech World 2
- FTBLite2
- Magic World 2
- Monster

I would say that atleast FTBLite2, Monster and Magic World 2 is not suitable for us.
Personaly I think the Direwolf20 modpack would be the best choise, he runs it with the creators, and I think that helps with removing bugs between the mods. Tech World 2 I haven't tried yet, I may do a test later.
I think one of the main focuses should be mod compatability, so we get as few crashes as possible when we play, better for us better for Broonie.

Horizon would be my choice if we were to go for one IF it's stable. I'm just hoping it wouldn't be buggy as i've seen. Then again i couldn't update due to FTB. Maybe they've fixed a lot.
The mod is certainly enjoyable if it works, so many things to do it's almost mind boggling. Horizon removes IC2 though frown whyyyyyy damn yous.... whyyyyyyyy.

Direwolf20 seems to be most "my thing" I'm curious as to horizons, but it looks like it revolves more around the mining, where I just like to build crazy stuff.

Horizons has been created to try and make a balance in all styles of play.

- tons of mobs and structures for the adventures
- Loads of ores and materials for miners and builders
- New Thaumcraft and bee mods for the mystically inclined
- massive server modifications available. As well as biome/map mods

and so much more. I really enjoyed playing it, but the bugs were a bit too much at the time.

Can't help test, both my laptops and my PC are 64 bit.

I was mostly put off by the lack of BC. I demand my machines that mine for me so i can just build whatever I damn well please =) Even if i dont understand tech much =S

Have you considered a different launcher such as ATLauncher? The version management seems better than FTB as you can install multiple versions of the same modpack if you need to, for example if you want to remain compatible with the server but also run a different version in single player for testing.

Wish we could go to DW 1.6.4 as it has a lot of mods most of us are familiar with and lots of new ones.
But i'm guessing its of the table as it would require more ram than a 32 bit can allocate.

I think I saw a launcher for custom kits too, not long ago, which would potentially make it possible to put something together and have both server and client available at the click of a button.

EDIT: I just saw Monster has just about every single mod I care about, so that has my vote =)

EDITEDIT: That is, assuming i can get monster to stop crashing on load...

The guys over at Mindcrack appear to be putting together a new FTB pack of mods of their own. Its not available for download yet, but since they are actively playing it and addressing bugs, it might be a viable option

Think its just to open the FTB launcher, click the options tab and adjust the RAM Maximum slide bar.

While FTB is running you can also hit Cntrl+alt+del to go into task manager. Find Javaw and right click, you'll see "set priority" can change from low to high. To be honest though increasing the ram as Mort suggested is usually all it needs.

I would like to update FTB Unleashed, but a new FTB Unleashed world run along side the current one would diminish my efforts on the current world, to avoid this painful issue (which I think everyone would agree that my efforts should not be diminished) a different mod pack would solve this problem cheesey

After testing FTB Monster for the past week i'd like to suggest using that but with a few mods activated/installed.

One would be the OPIS mod for admins, it allows you to amongst many things, check which chunks are using the most resources and if required shut them down.

Client side "ZansMinimap We're using that on FTBu right now."

Serverside "Dart Craft updated for 1.6.4"

Also the creature mods included add a realm of fun to the mix but that's a choice based on server resources.

I would love to try FTB Monster but I can't seem to download it from the launcher. The console just says "connection failed, trying again" five times and then "Download failed". I've tried to change the download servers but that doesn't help. Any advice?

Yeah you would have to update the launcher to get it, so you'd be locked out of unleashed for the time being.

The unable to connect is due to the launcher version mismatch, new launcher is required to connect and download. If that fails completely remove all FTB monster files already downloaded and try again. I got it on my second attempt.

(download 1.6 version from DC site. They have upgraded this to be less laggy and more of a challenge to get the armor upgraded)

*Please note to all players wishing to use Optifine with Monster And i do suggest it as it's made my gameplay a hell of a lot smoother.
Only use 1.6 D5 STANDARD
any of the others will result in missing limbs/textures as it's an incompatibility with Tinkers Construct.

I will continue testing and report any possible issues that may appear for the server.

I think they've repaired advanced information panels but that could be something to watch out for.

I'll add FTBmonster items into the banned thread when required.

FWIW Compact windmills appears to have a server-side config option that may have a big effect on gameplay, AFAIK the administrator can select rotors enabled or disabled. Its also a tad overpowered.

The documentation for IC2 Experimental is very patchy, heck some of the stuff I know is probably out of date by now. UU-matter has been nerfed beyond recognition, the proper energy crystal recipe is horrible (though dartcraft adds an easier one) the cables are really really messed up though the tiers actually make sense and AE integration is kind of erratic.

Last I looked there were two canning machines (discounting advanced machines) and one just filled cans but the other doubled as a liquid transposer. Also the IC2e pump actually does something!

with the monster server up and running and people helping test it, so far the biggest problem seems to be the myst mod causing lag and some ages are just to broken that the server kicks everyone off or restarts, to that end, do we need myst mod or do we limit (suggestions welcome) how/when/who/what can make myst ages.

It's mainly the twilight portions of myst worlds. On generation the base world is created then the myst mod changes blocks causing quite a bit of lag. For example the roots of the trees. The twilight mod unsurprisingly has not been coded very smoothly for server performance.

When we used the myst mods on FTBu for the first week or so it was a but unstable due to the increased creation of myst world but it settles down. Not much of a problem now due to crash protection allowing the server to restart. If anything i'd say remove twilight as it's the main cause of the issues.

Even on single player as soon as i planted 2 twilight trees in overworld, suddenly i was recieving lag and would occasionally be booted off.

The reason i'd rather have twilight removed VS age worlds is that after age worlds were introduced we no longer had massive quarry holes everywhere in the world and if a quarry was causing problems broonie could wipe the age worlds and it would cure the issue without affecting overworld.. also the linking books to connect to other worlds like the end and the nether removes the need for the 1000 block seperation between nether portals.

So all in all the myst mod is actually more desirable for usability than Twilight forest.

There are pro's/cons for both mods but in my opinion Myst is the lesser of two evils in this case.

well i think its possible to disable twilight within myst ages, but i'm not 100% convinced thats the only issue (i'll be happy if i'm wrong though).

It's possible, but an absoule joy, try figure out which pages exactly are the correct biomes, as the Bools to enable or disable pages... :

example: B:biome184.enabled=true

1-254..... as I said, try figure out which are the TF biomes in that.

Also if entering the biome in an age crashes the server repeatedly, what happens if you run into said biome in TF?

I'd assume the reaction would be the same, the best way to check I assume is finding a glacier (it's snowing in the age that crashed me, so i think it'd be a glacier?)

Happens quite randomly unfortunately. TW smashes us with lag quite often when travelling through its many biomes especially at high speed which puts the server under a fair bit of strain affecting everyone. The problem fully comes in when loading both new age world and TW code at the same time.

I crashed twice last night, once in a fully TW/savanna age and second in a TW/volcano/ice sea age.

The third world that seems to have locked me out of the server consisted of me spawning inside the trunk of a TW giant oak (would have thought there were protections against that happening).

After FTB ulti, FTBu and now FTBm all my server or client crashes to do with age worlds have all contained a lot of TW code. I've tested standard plains worlds and been able to spend hours in there with no problems. This leads me to the conclusion that it's TW causing the issues. But as with any conglomerate of coding it could be a multitude of varying codes mashing together to create an unstable concoction.

I'm surrently mostly frustrated with my lack in ability to log on without crashing the server.

If scrapping TW will prevent stuff like that, i'm all for it. Mystcraft on the other hand, i'd part with pain in my heart.

I wouldn't like to see any of those 2 go..
I'm for trying to stop Twilight and Mystcraft integration.. I'm still kinda new to all ftb and I would hate to see any of the mods go since I'm really enjoying myself getting to know those mods.. (I'm yet to slay an Ur-Ghast.. smile)
Twilight is cool cause it gives exploring in minecraft more meaning (also more mob diversity and if we get gravi gun back, best way of getting nether stars) and Mystraft is awesome for many things (such as doing bee research in an all day, no weather age really helps, also what Draze said, ppl would just use QuarryPlus to mine out all Overworld)..
Another note, I would really like if we could get the new updated DartCraft, since it' more balanced and introduces many very useful and fun items..
(if we don't get gravy gun, it would be good to at least get force wrench back..)

Dartcraft's become a bit overpowered, but in a good way as you still have to work on it to get to the good stuff. There's some evidence that force trees hammer your FPS.
If the version installed adds force grinding then its a relatively simple ore processing system that integrates well with AE and gives a roughly 225% metal yield + some bonus products.

I'm not sure about why people keep mentioning dartcraft =S

As far as I know it's not in monster and though that's a bit sad, I believe the general sentiment has always been not having to mess with adding mods yourself?

I'd be willing to suffer having to add a mod, but it might be difficult for people that join CFUK for monster if they are stopped because they dont have dartcraft (which even now they may never have heard of)

There are a LOT of ways to make your character all-powerful in monster already (maricraft/adv. genetics in particular) though I would vote for taking off ghast fireballs on players, as... they explode. It'll be quite easy to grief if all you have to do is spam ranged TNT. Same for creepers if server settings don't stop players from blowing a hole in the world.

It's mainly some of the things dartcraft added not just the armor. But yeah if it's too much to add in and get other players to install i agree. Would be nice to have it though.

To be honest the steps to install a new mod into the ftb client is very simple.

Download pack> open client > Click on monster > edit pack > Open folder > drop in file > done > launch monster.

If agreed upon i'd do the work to do a quick guide and link to the right mod version. Very easy.

As for broonies side as he keeps most things default for easier server management all he'd have to do is drop the mod pack in the server mods folder.

I agree it'd be nice, it's mostly from the case of a new FTB user trying this server that it seems impractical to me, just think what you might have thought if the first thing you'd seen logging into CF|UK was an error screen saying you'd done it wrong. It might keep people from choosing to join up.

As Draze also mentioned it's not to make your character strong, at least for me, it's about the functionality of some items and diversity it brings.. Force wrench, bottled Wither (and other mobs), easy way to store XP and easy way to salvage tools and armor you don't need, force tools, fortune cookies (who can live without those?!) making proven frames with force sticks, force engines, spoils bags! cheesey etc etc
As for adding mods, if you ever used Optifine, then you know how to add a mod, really simple and I don't think it's much of a problem..
But whatever Broonie chooses is fine with me, Monster is tons of fun as it is, this was just a suggestion.. (maybe add a poll for it?)

Now, a more important subject, launcher 1.3.6 came out, I would like to be notified if it's safe to update or not..

And last thing, for mod suggestions I would add for consideration Equivalent Exchange 3 and since Monster doesn't have soul shards mod, version 2 came out which makes it more balanced (also reduces lag cause it works like vanilla spawner now and doesn't work if player is not close to it..)
But then again your are right about adding mods, some ppl find that annoying or just don't want to add to the original pack and if that's the situation, I would just make them add DartCraft ^_^ haha

It isn't for myself that I'm considering the ramifications though, I was working on making a mod for a while and made several packs myself with my choice mods so i'm quite apt at messing with mods.

Still, not everyone actually bothers with what can become a snake's nest of faulty IDs or other joy which magnifies the want for pre-made mod packs even more.

Last I messed with dartcraft force sticks weren't accesible due to a conflict with natura, so anything using those is lost to me unless i cheated it in which makes the experience not count to me.

Regarding spawners:

Dartcraft makes the vanilla spawners craftable and movable (wrench), well recent versions do anyway. Obtaining the materials (mob chunks and upgrade cores) takes work but its not excessive.

As far as I'm aware its 1.1.3, you'll probably have to delete the "unleashed" folder and force FTB to re-download otherwise it keeps the core mods from 1.1.7.

If I recall it's a copy of the entire unleashed 1.1.3 folder, and if you also set the version to 1.1.3 in the launcher it will prevent it offering to update every time you log in.

Is there a machine that will make force sticks correctly? There's something set up at spawn that will convert force logs to force sticks somehow but I have no idea how.

Yeah that's for FTBunleashed. It uses the logistics mod to craft the logs. Logistics use the same recipe but i guess dont recognise the "barricade" recipe and as such create the force sticks.
