Can't run FTB packs again...

I don't know if its Windows 10 causing this, might plug the old hard drive back in and see if things run better under 7?

1.88 vanilla is running fine.

It's possible, i know Win10 added certain support for Java but its early days yet so there may still be a lot of bugs to iron out. As you suggested you could try win7 again and if it runs your suspicions about Win10 is probably correct.

since the vanilla client now has its own java built in, it should always work, u might need to do a fresh install of java for win10 to help make sure files are all in the right places to get modded MC working.

also double check you've got win10 compatible gfx drivers and not just running whatever win10 tried to use/install.

So what do you think? uninstall and reinstall java?

I'm a bit stuck for decent Windows video drivers for this machine, I'm not certain if Windows 10 just inherited the driver update (that did work) from Win 7 or replaced them?

I would boriseng; I'm using 10 and worked ok for me. In the ftb launcher if you don't have java there's a link to take you direct to the download page. I'm using 1.7.0_71 (64bit) and it's working ok on my end; was just a pain getting the right java version

Edit: did you do an upgrade or a wipe when installing 10 out of interest ? That could have carried something over . .

Windows 10 was an upgrade, but from a fairly clean system as I'd clean-installed 7 when I got the SSD.

The Java version reports as Version 8 update 60, though FTB calls it 1.8.0_60 so maybe I'd have more luck with the older version?

There only seems to be two official video driver versions for this system, the ones installed by default and one update from the manufacturer.

I don't know if maybe I can ditch the manufacturer's video drivers and use generic Intel ones instead?

My other idea was to trim off some disk space and put Ubuntu on and see if things work better in that?

I suppose another test might be to download the "jar" version of Vanilla and see how that runs.

FWIW did you have to jump through any hoops to download a Version 7 java? Apparently I need an Oracle account just to download it. I don't think it matters though...

OK just to update...I put the old HDD in and it booted. Its horribly slow though I put up with it at the time. That's the one drawback with an SSD, its really hard to go back. Anyway FTB runs mostly OK apart from a bit of carping and a heinously long load time.

Much to my surprise the video driver details are almost but not quite identical, Win7 reports 8.15.10.2141 and Win10 reports 8.15.10.2900

Both have 2013 release dates.

The adapter identifies itself as Intel HD Graphics Pentium, which seems to be a generic ID and you seem to need a bit of detective work to determine the right file so I've given up.

Update: The processor is a Pentium P6200 and Intel don't appear to have drivers going back that far.

I've tried reverting to 7 using the restore option, but some things seem a bit borked so I might clean install.

What I'd like is to make a Windows 10 install disk so I can clean install 10 when I want to.
Anyway I think I'll look for a new PC in the Spring, I'm planning to make this one last a bit longer.

Yeah 7 is holding together now. Got some IE glitches so I might clean install if I can be bothered but right now a config tweak has fixed things. FTB is spamming errors to the console but it is RUNNING!! and PLAYABLE.

yeah, older java; I'm running 1.7.0_71. I used a download link that was within the ftb launcher under the options for java

FTB was running fine on my last attempt in Windows 10. Have you got both 32 and 64-bit versions of JAVA installed on your new HDD? - I seem to remember reading somewhere that FTB mod packs still only ran on 32-bit JAVA builds, so just a 64-bit pack would not work.

Also, although your CPU is 64-bit, were you runnign a 32-bit version of windows 7? - if so the upgrade to windows 10 may have upgraded most things to 64-bit, but not everything - so a fresh install of Win 10 might be advised.

Also - can you plug both HDD's in (Win 10 and Win 7), or is your system a laptop? If you can plug both in you could set up a boot loader to select which one to boot on start-up (obviously not possible on a laptop unless you have a huge partitioned HDD with a system on each partition).

EDIT: Oh - and you shouldn't have to set up an account to download JAVA - be careful as you may have gone through an unsafe website and got a dodgy download. Use This link to download the auto-selected version of Java for you computer, or try this page if you want a selection of versions to download wink

I understand why you'd find that suspicious Soul, but there's no need to worry. Oracle want you to make an account to access the OLD versions of Java, as 1.7 is way out of date now as far as they're concerned. I had to do the same thing. 1.8 is still easy to get hold of, but FTB hates it.

I just like to be cautious these days, as there are soooo many copy-cat websites out there now offering the same "free" software. Some look pretty authentic too., but the download isn't what you think it is.

I was doing a fresh install a year ago on my netbook and it was getting late so I wasn't paying attention to the websites I was downloading software from. Ended up downloading a dodgy copy of something (can't remember what, think it was a graphic driver), that changed the search engines of IE and Chrome, plus after a few days started randomly popping open IE and loading up random dodgy websites (and each time you closed the window, it opened two more, etc.) Virus checker was wiped off the system and wouldn't install from a USB stick (couldn't access any USB storage devices). Ended up having to wipe it and start again.

I'm running Java 1.8 now
It seems OK if I run Windows 7.

Well ... nearly a year later and I decided to go for Windows 10 again. I've upgraded from Windows 7, so this install's been upgraded, downgraded then upgraded again. So far so good.

DW20 appeared to be broken again...

BUT I'd downloaded Java 1.7.80 64 bit previously for another reason so I thought I'd give it a go...
...and it works!!

I've configured FTB to point to that folder not the Java 8 one, and whats more I don't think I'm getting the error code spam I used to get while it was running.

And there's more...

Community Choice runs now too
