[poll] city-like town project

404thread, Tue Jan 25 2011, 11:20PM

location: -100 -300
size: covering a larger area of land, all flat.
style: think new-york manhattan style. huge skyscrapers and impressive buildings. no mudhuts.
main block types in use: stone, cobblestone, steps, glass. other stuff for decoration.
project time-range: 4-8 days.

lookin for people interested in this. if you are up for it, come to the spot and start doing Griefers that needs to be done.

Don't quite see the motivation in starting a project of this size while on a temp map.. Helps with boredom, sure, but still: Might aswel wait for the normal map to be back instead of losing all that hard work once it does.

It's up to you, ofcourse, just putting it out there.

I would like to play around with it a bit. Maybe not go all out and do a full city on the temp map, but at least try to figure out how the streets should be laid out, how wide to make them, how big/tall/wide the buildings should be, etc. Maybe just make a 2 block area with only the building's foundations, just to get the dimensions and scale right. It could get too congested if we build too many tall buildings right next to each other. A case of not seeing the trees for the forest.

There should be a central park-type area in the middle, partly forested, with a river and bridges, and a few blocks of townhouses around the main skyscraper region. And maybe a market area, and a parking garage. Subway stations (with working minecarts) or an elevated train (or both). Or even a San Francisco type trolley system with the tracks down the middle of the street. The details will make the place feel more like a city.

While you were offline 404, I got quite a bit more flattened and all of one lake filled in, and 80% of the second lake filled in. Then I was flattening the area some more when the server timed out.

I miss the server :<

Forgot to mention, I would prefer the city to be realistic as possible, no floating buildings or lava walls or portals or whatever.

BlockZero

the town you can consider as practice. believe me, practice makes perfect and the more effort you put in it now, you will get 5times back when you build stuff on the real server. ive experienced it. version 2.0 or 3.0 of a project is always mutch nicer and better looking than after the first attempt.

i saw that someone had been workin on the flattening smile nice! i set up a few roads today, then the server went offline again. i absolutely love the idea of minecart tracks on the streets. that is imba, but players/animals might interfere here more than underground. the city should have 4 or 5 subway stations, 4 in each corner and maybe 5th in the middle. they will be 2-way. the amount of iron for this is kinda sour to harvest on a temp map tho, so maybe drop that and just mark up where it should be. also, the town will be realistic, so dont worry about foating islands or lava walls.

i am gonna divide the town into plots of land, mutch like the ones in aconans castle in the real server, but mutch bigger. also, a wall or obstacle to hold out zombies is yet to be designed, but it is planned.

we need more cobble, so ill mark an area between 16 and 5 height for cobble harvesting.

Just wondering - with the cartographer and mods down, how to use those coords ;p?
Re: [poll] city-like town project
404thread, Fri Jan 28 2011, 10:56AM

hold down f3 ingame and it will list you 3 numbers, x y and z. these numbers will start to change once you are moving. spawn point is X=0 Y=64 Z=0. Y cordinate is for height only so it isn't normal to use that coordinate. the building site is at -100 -300. can you figure it out?

Wish I could check it out, server refuses to connect again, been like that all night for me. :sigh:

Anyway... for anyone else who hasn't been there in a while, we have a full perimeter fence all the way around the region, and its fully lit with torches inside the fence.... haven't seen a single mob in a dozen or so MC day/night cycles. The fence should be spider proof as well, seen it work a few times when spiders get stuck under it trying to climb it. So, its a safe place to work now.

Also, when I was last on, finished the framework for my skyscraper, the spire reaches the max world height, so its almost too tall. Might drop it down a little bit. Its basically an Empire State Building rip-off, but will have much bigger windows.

404, did you start the "town hall/L station" yet? I am assuming thats what you worked on, you sounded like that was next on your list before you logged off yesterday.

404thread, Fri Jan 28 2011, 07:55PM

server got reverted. started again from scratch. now server is offline again. if i log back tomorrow and see the same sight as 2 days ago i will fucking quit minecraft till a stable release comes out.

404thread, Sun Jan 30 2011, 03:38AM

there are now 10 high, some fully and some nearly completed towers in the city! tons of other foundations have been set already! it seems like the town is a hit, and lack of space is starting to get severe... if you don't have a slot here yet you should come asap.

also, gonna place railways tomorrow, draw a map and fix up the streets.
town hall is built and the railways will start and stop from here, neatly connecting it to the farms, cobblestone factory, spawn point and the docks. railway tracks will run over the main streets. it's gonna be epic!

No kidding. When i finally got logged back on, my entire building I built using Lava/Water method was gone frown Oh well, version 2 is now up and was much easier to build. All that iron and diamond I lost dying 30 times on the old building were not lost anymore, so that made me happy.

But yea, if the map gets reverted again, I won't rebuild again till everything is more stable.

One thing I want to do, 404, its to build a tunnel from near the spawn to the city, since its so populated now, and people seem to fall to their death a lot. My thoughts are not to put a railway in (too much iron needed) but it will be at least a 3x3 tunnel fully lit the entire way, to protect against mobs on the way there. I can't count the number of times I fell off the first building and got killed again running back to the city at night.
Re: [poll] city-like town project
404thread, Sun Jan 30 2011, 02:23PM

agreed. 3x3 tunnel from spawn.

I think when we go back to the other map, the city should be copied across and be made the new spawn point. It would give a great first impression.

When/if the old map gets restored, I am fully willing to help re-create the city there, if it can't be copy/pasted. Re-build my skyscraper, and help gather materials, as well as help making glass/cleanstone, sandstone, etc.

It should be near spawn, but maybe not directly IN spawn, so when people spawn, say on a hill, they are not surrounded by big gray buildings and can't see the forest for the trees, but are overlooking metropolis from far enough away to see the entire city. Like a scene out of a movie or something.

how should one approach broonie about such a request of having an entire city copy-pasted...
Re: [poll] city-like town project
, Sun Jan 30 2011, 10:35PM

For those of you who have not been there.... this is the city in question:

http://minecraftblock0.imgur.com/newmap_city

Yes... I named it "Newmap City" because 404Thread focused all his time on building and supplying builders that he completely ignored the fact that the residents needed a proper street address ;P

EDIT: since taking these shots a few hours ago, Broonie has moved the server back to the old map.. so we may never see the city again frown These might be the only shots of the city unless it can be imported. At least we have some screens if not.

To complement block0's screenies, follow the link below for 3D schematics of the city, displayed on a stripped down version of a project I was working on for a while.

It may take a minute to load fully. Try clicking and scrolling and shift clicking and shift scrolling on stuff and you'll probably work out how to use it.

To complement the screenies, and the 3D map thingy whatever, here is a real-minecraft world of the actual world that was on the server.
