Goodbye old map, hello new map!

Flightster, Tue Feb 15 2011, 09:32PM

As you may have noticed before reading this post, we are now on a fresh map.. And no, this is not a "temp map" as we have been accustomed to during all the problems with hey0, bukkit and the server providers but an actual new map instead.

We realise all of you had your builds going on, and were proud of them (like all of us) but this is beyond our control.. Several chunks were corrupted on the old map, changing the surroundings of new spawn and beyond which caused us to have to make a decision. Keep the map, and deal with the corruption the best we could, or start a new map a little earlier than planned (because let's face it, it would have happened eventually).

We hope you won't be discouraged because of this, or "ragequit" our community, but will help us turn this new map into something incredible once again.. In closing, we aplogise for any inconvenience and will leave you with these screens.. Showing a small portion of the corruption:

A download will also be online once I get to a suitable location with good upload speed.

damn... I don't know whether to be really happy or disappointed. I guess in a way it will be nice to start afresh. I feel bad for all the people with epic projects on the go (mine have all been pretty much single person jobs) - but if it is unavoidable so be it. Is there anyway to guarantee that we won't get more corrupt chunks this time round?

Well.... close to 100 diamonds, nearly 1,000 iron bars, several hundred gold bars, a double chest full of redstone stacks, nearly 30 full double chests of cobble, etc etc...... gone.

meh, time for a fresh start anyway XD

It could be a lot worse; the server might have gone away permanently this time, and I wouldn't be able to play with the nice people i've met over the past 2 months. Thanks for trying Broonie, those that ragequit just don't realize the fleeting nature of life to begin with. Imagine having a house fire in real life and losing everything. I have someone close to me that has lived through that. A minecraft map reset is nothing by comparison.

One thing the new map begs for, since there is a real lack of flat building land near the new spawn, but a lot of water.... is a water city. Keep spawn clean, but put a city nearby that people can see when first logging on.

It would be like Venice..... no streets, only canals with boats for travel... some walk ways that have arched bridges over canals, and some courtyards... but mostly boat/canal based travel, and no modern skyscrapers.... keep it rustic.

Just a suggestion though... haven't really explored the map yet. Could be some flat land right behind me... I haven't even left the walls of spawn yet, lol.

I really want to ragequit. I really do. But I'll stay... I'm not going to be managing anymore server projects though. If someone else wants the job, the information on BAFI is all still here on the forums.

Maybe I'm just used to this.... as a kid, coming home to see my amazing lego construction project demolished by my parents, saying "oh, we thought you were through playing with them so we put them up". Happened so many times, I once got the bright idea of gluing the pieces together. It worked like a charm, my project was still in one piece when I got home from school... but it had its disadvantages as well; that was the last project I built with those legos, ever. Lol.

This map reset really reminded me of those days... the best builds I created were when i was home sick for several days in a row. Those were epic (in my child-mind, lol). But, I knew as I was building it, the clock was ticking on how long it would last. It was almost a relief when it got taken apart though, as I couldn't bear to destroy it myself, and couldn't build anything new till it was destroyed.

I'm just saying, BAFI wasn't just another lego project for me. I do that sometimes, where I'll build something small or simple just for the sake of building. I do this on other servers, build small things, etc. This is why I wasn't that broken up about losing my mob spawner from the temporary map a couple weeks ago. But BAFI was the Project.

Between filling in the lake, carving it out with tnt, filling it in with lava, building the foundation and the castle on top of it, plus the city and the city walls-- not to mention hiring and managing the people who helped to build it and developing a system for the whole thing-- I got a little attached to it.

Now I'm losing it to a bit of chunk corruption. No chance of recovering it and turning it into the new map's server project unless we start from scratch, again.

Personally, I'd much rather fix the corrupted chunks, or import the project to the new map. This was a community project, or I tried to make it a community project, just as Broonie intended. But community projects don't last long unless there is some sense of permanency.

I'll let someone else go through that frustration. I'll just build myself a house.

I think I'm done. I know everyone lost alot, not just me, but I spent most of my time gathering and getting ready for a big project. That's all down the drain, map went before I could actually go through with it.

You might be saying, well, playing the game itself should be fun. Sure, might be, but gathering for all that time isn't really that much fun... for me, it's the big pay off at the end where you finish something you've put time into.

So... good luck with the server and whatever projects you've got in mind.

yeah Im with you reed. It was nice having you in this great community. I saw what you were working on and it did not come effortlessly. So i see what you mean

We all lost valuable things that meant a lot to us. Wealth, but also time and effort. But this server wont be great and fun if everyone leaves.

Everyone should realise that it would've happened at one time or another.. There will always be a time when a map gets too big for a server to function properly, it only happened sooner than planned due to corruption (which was more then the above screens show)..

I do, ofcourse, realise it's heartbreaking to lose a build you've been working on for ages and have put your heart and soul into (bafi) but that shouldn't be a reason to say "screw you guys, I'm leaving".. We're a community before anything else, and losing your builds due to a - forced - new map shouldn't step in the way of that.

Never said I was leaving. I just won't be building or participating in anymore projects.

I didn't mean you directly, was just making an example with bafi (which was the project with the most dedication, in my opinion) smile

Bafi was truly epic, and will be missed.

I'm pretty bummed about losing my personal projects, but there's always room for improvement.
With each new map we play on, I see a progression in building skills of my own work, and other's as well.

The great thing about Minecraft is that the possibilities are endless! There's always something new to build, and things to discover!

What's been done has been done, and I'm thankful that we still have a server to play on and be with this amazing community. So let's get out there, and make the server better than the last! tongue

I must admit i've not been around either due to the recent server issues. having to make 4 attempts at the base of the London Gherkin Rdeedfrey and I were trying to build kinda got me disheartened, so I thought i'd wait and come back when things are more stable.

now, i come back to realise the 60+ man hours rdeed and i put into digging the huge "man made chunk error" to both get materials, and be able to build it at almost full scale.... is now gone frown

completely gutted. as i'm sure many others are.

i'd personally have preferred to put time into fixing those chunk corruptions and getting the place back to normal. it would'nt have taken that long, surely?

as i've said i'm honestly gutted. i think i'll need some time to gather my thoughts before i start another big project. maybe when the server has had a month of stable uptime. but until then i think i'll just explore and keep things small.

sorry to see you go rdeed... but do come back and look me up sometime smile

Suffice to say, I have learnt that you must always be prepared to lose what you build.

It just happens with minecraft. With the constant updates, which make the old map chunks useless. Or, the eventual corruption of the map, It just happens.

It is a shame, However we have had that map for a while. It did seem that we could keep the map forever. Yet, keep in mind that the center of the map was dieing, and everyone was moving off to 3000-9000 blocks off.

I am confident that this map will last just as long or longer then the last. However it won't last till the end of the year.

Whilst the Server can host a map that gets larger and larger, eventually it starts to cripple the server. Not just in bandwith and processing but the community.

We all know each other because we have pretty much worked together, and closely. A new player coming in, must be daunting.

We moved the spawn from the castle to the hourglass because the old spawn town was dead. And here is the problem, the center of the map was dead weight. Scenic, but nobody was using it. So everyone loads it for no reason.

Aghh. I lost my Castle, the labs and my hilltop house version 1, 2 and 3. I also lost my Skyscraper. Nothing in comparison to BAFI. Which is the greatest loss on the server in my opinion. So close to becoming a living entity.

To note: Leaving one server because you have to start fresh (which, like aconan said, will never be non-existant on ANY server), or going on a different server and start something new there is the same thing.. The only difference is that you know / like people on one, and don't know anyone on the other.

Like that analogy? I do smile

so, just as i was getting over the loss of many solid days of work gone on the old server, I log in this morning to find i've lost everything i did yesterday *sigh*

I'll keep my eye on the forums, maybe log in and mope around but this is a bit of a kick in the nuts when you're down frown

lets hope the monday switchover brings more stabililty
