Project Midgar

, Sat Nov 06 2010, 02:43PM

Hey folks. Just a week or two ago I posted a thread for a server project to build Midgar from FFVII. Unfortunately, this project never took off due to a number of factors, mainly that the old map was unrecoverable. Anyways, since the update, I have been working on this project on the other server I play on (where I am an admin and have full use of cuboid). I don't want to leave you guys out of the loop, so I will be posting my updates on the project here. Below is an image of my progress as of a few days ago:

I cannot stress enough how enormous this structure is. Everything that every other player has explored is in the upper-right corner of the map. The giant circle is the circumference of Midgar. Another one of the admins mistakenly placed his castle inside my circle, and I never noticed it until I looked at this map. Since this map was made, I have since finished the circle and made warps for significant locations to make traveling easier. Next step is to erase all of the terrain inside the circle, make more warps and coordinate markers, then I can start building the structure itself.

D: Bad news, really bad news...

I might not be able to complete Project Midgar. Apparently, in the process of exploring all of the land inside Midgar, The map has increased in size to about 300MB and lags the server, warping to Midgar now causes the server to crash. Owner of the other server says this is a bad thing, so he's going to investigate to see if it's actually my work on Midgar that's doing it or something else. I'll update with a final word soon, but this is a bummer.

Oh that really sucks. Hopefully it's just something else.

Good news folks!
I got the ok to begin construction again. The going theory is that the massive quantities of empty space is what is causing the server lag. So the owner gave me the ok to begin construction in an attempt to fill in the area. So even though the bottom of the giant hole isn't empty yet, I'll begin building the disc and pillars when server demand is low.

cheesey

If you want to move what you have done so far. Give me a map backup and ill transfer the chunks onto ours. Should work in theory. I think

I dunno Broonie, something like that could bring your server down for a few hours, and cause lag at the mere presence of a player in the vicinity. The simple act of warping to Midgar right now causes the the server's quad-core cpu to max out for a full 5 minutes. Which was why I was asked to stop working there. >.> Midgar takes up approximately 100-200 MB of the other map.

If you're sure though, I'm sure we could work something out. It could be Server Project #2 or something, lol.

It never occurred to me until just a few minutes ago, that I really should be doing this project in MCedit, so I'm going to explore the rest of the void area and get started filling everything in with goodies. That should make progress even faster than with using cuboid.

Haha wow, that's huge.
Yet I still don't know what Midgar is. =P

A bump if I may?

1. What happened to this guy? Seems this had MASSIVE potential

And 2. Would anyone be interested in helping me build midgar? On a smaller scale of course, looking at the image he posted that looks HUEG, maybe 500x500, with the shinra building being accessible to the public?

Richie, tuatha has been a member of CF:UK for a long time. This project was planned about two maps ago. He made some pretty nice projects on past maps and even made BAFI (Big Ass Floating Island) which was the CF:UK project at the time. He hasn't been on lately. I don't know why.
