Re: Not just a hole in the ground, its a hole in the ground ON FIRE!!! (Server Discussion) Posted on 11 Oct : 14:23
Why is opening portals from the nether blocked? The only reason I can think is to stop new portals popping up in other people's builds in the world map? Its a pain that portals can't be relit once broken and on vanilla it caused me a very annoying crosslink.

So the explosions are caused randomly when something is mined?

IMO a free PVP zone works a lot better when you're mostly limited to swords, arrows and maybe the odd fire charge. Throw in dynamite, nukes and the variable-yield BFG9000 (aka mining laser) and you guys'll be down to bedrock pretty soon. Not that I'm complaining though...

Is the nether more hostile in Tekkit, I didn't notice huge amounts of stuff going boom on the regular server? Then again one problem with an "anything goes" zone in tekkit is just how much "grief" players have access to...

I think ghast fireballs weren't destroying netherack on the regular server, wheras on tekkit they appear to. I'm guessing the explosion damage rules are set differently?

Also is it worth moving the spawn portal on the world side so it doesn't open in the crater, or filling the crater in, or is that just how it is take it or leave it? Last time I looked the portal was a bit crosslinked, though I've destroyed the one I made.

Thanks for clarifying that, I haven't built any pipes yet.

BTW are dimension anchors allowed?
Re: Tekkit Server Lag (Server Discussion) Posted on 10 Oct : 14:07
Can you clarify: is it mainly buildcraft stuff that does this? A lot of the IC2 stuff seems to happily go to idle e.g. its powered but not doing anything, is that sufficiently "off".
I'm guessing an IC2 miner unit could potentially cause a similar issue if the chest filled up or was missing but when I tried one it drilled to bedrock pretty quickly, and halted there.

An over-literal interpretation of the announcement would mean having to run a redstone "kill circuit" to my batboxes or break the wiring every time I log out.

FWIW I'm finding it a pain that so much of the content needs glowstone. Burned through a bunch of gold dust so far, and actually mining some glowstone is looking more and more impossible right now.

I had a promising looking portal too, then it seems to have got trashed by ghasts I think, though I thought cobble was ghast-proof.

Sorry, just venting.

Yeah I wondered what could have caused that damage...

Then I took a mining laser with me and did a bit of "mining"...Now I get it. cheesey

Incidentally I've closed my portal but the return path is still a bit "off". Unfortunately the spawn portal tends to pop up at the bottom of a burning hole at the moment.

Incidentally is Tekkit based on an earlier build of minecraft than the regular one, a few things seem to point to an older revision:
Smelting doesn't drop experience
Crafting a sign gives you one not three
Using a lava bucket as fuel doesn't return the bucket

Yeah that looks like what I need, unfortunately I've wasted a bunch of iron already, time to get digging again I guess.

Is it me?

I've dug up a bunch of stuff, built a farm, I'm collecting materials and now I kind of want to build something cool, something from Industrialcraft maybe?
I'm just not getting the wiki, there's just so much stuff that I don't know where to start.

I can't get on either. Its ping-able though.

Hole in the ground, both on SP and on CF

No actually on CF I started by covering an island with torches, the digging came later, and it wasn't until I found a particularly epic cave that I really started to go underground. The funny thing now is how much grief it caused me trying to make a safe enterance, the first time I broke through was at ceiling height and I hadn't properly figured out the gravel drop method so I lost a full set of armor by falling in then having no way to retrieve my stuff. The second breakthrough was too low and ended up in another tunnel below it. I think the third try actually hit floor level. Since then it seemed logical to build a farm underground, eventually I might move the cows down into a cave, clear the island and use it for a decorative build.

Single player I mostly relied on tunnels near the surface, didn't realise the importance of ladders and mineshafts, and the nearest thing to a house was the creeper resistant bunker I built in cobble as a tunnel entrance.
