As I think I'll probably write something (if only for the novelty) and don't plan to do it from in Minecraft, I did a bit a math on the books, so that I could write something outside of MC and paste it in.

If you're interested (based on the 12w17a snapshot), the books have 13 lines to a page, and can fit 22 characters on a line (spaces count as a character). That's 286 characters to a page, and 14,300 characters to a book.

That comes to (on average) 50-60 words to a page, and 2,500-3,000 words to a book. So you can probably fit a fairly short story in there, if, like me, you're thinking of something fictiony.

If, like me, you are planning on writing something outside of MC to paste/copy in, remember, the above word counts are rough guesses, the character counts are what... uhm, count.

Very unlikely. I don't think there's a monospace font around that has music notes, and it's not part of standard ASCII, that I'm aware.

Not sure about other instruments, but simple ASCII text lends itself well to guitar tabulation.

Text in chat and in signs has a fairly limited character set:

But it looks like books will support any unicode character, so perhaps there is hope yet.

On a side note, as of recently, with a simple server plugin you can actually get any unicode character in chat/signs. Might be something to look into.
