I'm not entirely sure yet. My next experiment will be to see how high I can build the top of the sphere, and then we'll see if I can build it again without touching the ground this time. Heh.

It might be cool to have a smaller sphere within that sphere, and fill it with lava. Not sure how it'd look with the larger sphere filled with water though. Just a thought heh.

I'm unsure if the lavas light will make it through the water, but its something to consider. Would have to build the lava sphere first... I'm not messing around in a already flooded sphere. >.>

I was going to actually make a smaller sphere out of lightstone and put it in the center, but part way through building that last sphere I gave up on bothering, since this one took me several hours to get right.

I made a couple lava lamps on the old map, but i tried to avoid spheres because they were a pain to make.

Well it'd look pretty cool with either lava or glowstone!
