In case it wasn't obvious, I wasn't being serious with this. No, I don't think good English = intelligence. I DO think that if English is your first language and you can't grasp basic grammar, you're not trying hard enough.

Oh a slightly different note, Depending on how eh...slouched I am, my spelling ranges from good to absolutely crap. Who knew? ^^

That sums me up completely. Why bother trying to do perfect english when people can easily understand what your saying without being perfect(Its been proven that you don't need words to be spelt with the correct letters, they just need to have the same overall "look" for your brain to work out what the word is).

Also Chrome has a built in Spell checker, so now no one needs to know how to spell! Doesn't do grammar however.... maybe they will add that later!

I have a bigger problem with people who don't use proper punctuation. Especially the non-period users... You know who you are! You hurt mah eyes!

The problem isn't with those that have small grammatical errors. The problem comes when you don't know enough grammar for your context to be clear. We mostly understand people who speak English somewhat well, but sometimes we come across people with so bad grammar that understanding them becomes difficult.

THIS is where the problem lies.

This goes for all languages. I recall once a few years back, I let a teenager use my computer to chat on MSN. He was about 14 at the time I believe, and was staying at our house. At one point, he asked me if I could help him read what his friend was saying. I read through the chat, and couldn't make sense of it (this was all in Norwegian - our native language), so I tried reading what he had been writing. I couldn't make sense of that either, so I asked him what he had been writing. The reply: he couldn't read it himself and didn't remember what he had written!

Is grammar important? To some extent, yes. When you can't even write yourself understood in your own language, that's bad. Real bad.

My grammar is fine - Spelling, now; im terrible at that. I blame MS Word. ive had to right click 2 words in this single post .:S

Bad spelling isn't hard to overlook as long as your grammar is there. On the other hand; if you have bad grammar AND bad spelling, then you just won't be able to make yourself understood.

It's all about being understood, so we're not going to enforce grammar police actions on people. Nor spelling.
