Blinkly is 52? I didn't know that.
But steve was a legend, even with all his gimmics he changed the way we use computers.

I don't think it was cancer. I think he saw the new iPhone 4S and went "But it's exactly the same!" I think Steve Jobs died of shame.

lots of stuff...
The only thing apple did that "changed the world" was making an online downloadable service tied to devices which allowed people to easily download applications/music/etc. Everything else was just other peoples ideas shoved in an expensive "Stylish" case. You're drastically underestimating Jobs' impact on computers.

Apple took the Windows/Icons idea from xerox. They gave them apple shares to get a tour and see what they had developed. Apple as far as i understand had to write there own version but they "Nicked"(Technically they paid for it) the idea and also took some of there staff(Well hired them). I don't know if Microsoft nicked from xerox or apple.if my memory of computing history serves me correctly microsoft actually stole the mouse point and click idea from xerox.
Tablets are pointless for home users. Apple is good at making gimic technology sellable to home users. A tablet does not improve life in any way... unless you like looking at your e-mail on the toilet. A computer/laptop is a far better solution. The only market where tablets are useful is where you are on the move alot, like a doctor in a hospital. Thats where tablets shine.Microsoft have been trying to push tablet PC's since the 90's, yet nobody wanted one until the iPad came around, and now everyone is copying that.
Most ideas in history were laughed at when they were first though of, then someone comes along years later, implements it and its a success. Timing is one of the things you need. Most ideas are before there time. Projection keyboards for example existed since around 2002, so the idea of removing the need for a keyboard from devices was around before the iPhone. So the concept was already around. To take another example, how many smart phones were keyboardless before the iPhone? The idea of a phone without a physical keyboard was laughed at. Now, it's hard to find a phone with a keyboard.
@Beagrie: When it comes the GUI and Mouse, Apple were the first to have commercial success using them. That doesn't mean that they changed the landscape of computing. It was other companies that were behind them and the sole reason that we have them today. Without apple someone else would have done it. Thats the point. Without apple you would still have the same technology.

P.S IPhones/IPads like to freeze. Just because they have sold alot doesn't make the devices good. People mainly buy them because of social reasons, IPhones/IPads are the stylish device to impress your friends. If people want a working phone for phone calls they would pick a device which had a better track record at being a phone.
All apple did was make devices look stylish. They were not innovative. Without apple you would still have mouse's, you would still have GUI's like todays, etc. The only difference is devices may not look as "stylish". The look of a device does not change the course of computing, technology innovation does.
When it comes to standards, they only come from what is the most popular, not what is the best.
Einstein invented maths. Apple invented nothing. Are you saying that Einstein did not change the landscape of physics because someone else would have made the conclusions he made, eventually?

They are pointless for anything other than to people who are on the move alot like doctors. Most people will use them at home sitting down, which is a pointless use for them as a laptop is a better solution. But laptops are not a fashion accessory, they are not a social status symbol. The iPad comes along and, hey presto, people at home have a use for them. You might still think they're pointless (so do I, as matter of fact, but for MY purposes, not in general) but millions of people don't.

Im saying he never did anything special, he took other peoples ideas and put them in a stylish case. That in my book does not make him a guy who changes the course of history, the people who change the course of history are the people who invent innovative things. The very people which he nicked ideas off. The person who invented the mouse made a far bigger contribution than the first person to make alot of money selling them. Are you saying he was just lucky?

That isn't coming through based on this thread.I could probably be called a Google fanboy

My phone never crashes. But thats proberly because its just a phone. It doesn't have any of the pointless crap (Though it does have some, like a camera with such a rubbish resolution you can't make out peoples faces in the pictures, etc) that the IPhone or any of the recent phones have. Im a practical guy, when i buy a phone i want a phone, not a Mini PC which crashes...but I can admit that my Nexus S crashes a hell of a lot more than my iPhone ever did.

Public as a whole are morons. Individuals can be smart however. If you do polls about things you will find that quite a few times the public will not pick the "Correct" option.but "the one that most people want to buy" is a damn good indicator.

For example, years ago i made a poll about which 2 button images would go well with a GUI. The first option was in the same theme as the GUI and fitted with the design. The second option didn't have the same theme, it stuck out like a sore thumb. The people chose the 2nd option even though it didn't match the GUI.
What you have to remember is with things like Phones people do not normaly choose them because they are the best phones. Alot of people choose them for social reasons like "I want a phone that impresses my friends". Phones are the Status symbols of today and Status symbols are all about what is "Cool" not what is innovative technology.
Basically i believe that people who make the innovative technology, etc are the ones who change the course of history not the people who first bring it to market. The people who invent the technology are the true Heroes not the people who make the most money from the inventions.
