Watched a couple of videos of this mod.... looks like a lot of fun. Unfortunately, I don't have Arma2. It costs 30 bucks for both the base game and the required expansion pack required to play Day Z. If I already had Arma2 I would probably already be playing this by now, lol.
i have to agree with block it looks fun and it would be good for all us crazy fools to get together on it but the price kinda puts you off especially if your short on cash
Well, it turns out I had some money sitting in my 'steam wallet' since last last xmas (hardly ever use steam anymore). Watched a few more videos of this mod, as well as a few videos of Arma2 gameplay (jets!, tanks!) and took the plunge. I bought Amra 2 Combined Operations (a requirement for the mod) and installed the mod (what a pain in the ass that last part was!).
Overall, the first hour of playing it, it didn't impress me that much. The videos you see make it seem more fun that what it initially turned out to be. The controls in Arma are daunting. Once I got them configured and could actually get around in the world, the first few encounters with zombies went... badly. The aiming is a bit weird, takes some getting used to.
So, after a couple hours, had my first encounter with a human player. Then things got real interesting, real fast. After spending my first few lives being pounced upon by a horde of zombies, it was refreshing to be sniped in the head for my meager under-powered 9mm pistol and single can of beans. The encounter went something like this... Me:"hello, I'm new, I see you in the barn, can I tag along?".... Him: "are you friendly? If so, come in to the barn with road flares in hand, no weapons". Me: "Ok, sure, cause I'm just that stupid".
Ok, the last part was what I SHOULD have said, and then ran the other way. Not me, though. I'm too trusting I guess. Got within sight of the barn doors and began to switch to road flares. While I was looking thru my back pack, took a shot to the head. Noobs, eh?
Unfortunately, the biggest threat in this game isn't the zombies, its the other players. So, my next few attempts to get inland and find decent gear, and non-hostile players, went a little better each time. My last encounter before giving up for the night was about an hour spent scrounging for blood packs while passing out every 2 minutes from blood loss, while trying to avoid other players and zombies.... and oh yea, blood loss makes your vision blurry and shaky. So that was intense. I didn't give up though, had some nice guns on me, wanted to survive badly, just needed to find either some blood packs and a friendly medic, or a LOT of food to replenish the blood.
In the end, it was yet another player that did me in. Never heard the shot, too far away I guess.
So, my overall impression of this mod is.. its intense. The fear and paranoia are not based on the zombie threat, its based on other players. You never know who is a good guy and who is just trying to murder you for your gear till its too late. I never did find any good guys, but I was trying to avoid human contact after the first couple of encounters went badly.
I now understand why this mod is so popular, and can't wait to play with some experienced players who won't head-shot me on sight.
