Because hell should be hell. It would be griefed =P and we ARE Crazy Fools. Kinda the whole point of at least 97.326745527% of members being psycho. Proven by science. Also if there was something worth protecting there we would need staff willing to monitor it. And that probably won't happen.
In the one where Flight made a boat for spawn(For the normal world), Broonie setup a nether spawn made of Bedrock. What happened is a few days later someone whipped out some tnt and blew everything around it up. Including the walkways which people were not allowed to grief(Which didn't stop them). The public portal was then closed. In previous main Nether maps we had a "no-griefing zone" which comprised of the immediate area around the portal as well as a few specific walkways. Any location past the general portal area was perfectly fine to use.

People will go there for materials they need, but they are not likely to stay longer than they need to be. So basically you just need to make a trip there once a month or less. Other than getting a few materials it has no real use. Which is why its pointless, because most people will choose not to enter the nether except on rare occasions. With unique materials and a means for PvP-type gameplay which the main map lacks, the Nether is hardly useless.
