Is it just me or is the business district just a little too cramped for comfort. With all these new shops opening up due to 1.0.0 the business district really needs to be expanded. Oh and whose is the giant redstone block, its not finished and hasn't been for ages. I dont really think it should be there and its taking up way too much space. Could somebody explain?
The redstone block at spawn is one of the rare really beautiful builds at spawn. It is a shame, though, it's unfinished.
I think I might try and finish it at some time later on. I've got too much to do right now, though, with the new build deveiling ceremony coming up on Friday, and stuff like that.
yeah there isnt much space in the business distrcit. ive just built there and not in an ideal location.
and that redstone building would look fab if built!
I think it would do but i think its wrongly placed. Fair play its a rare and beautiful thing its just in the wrong place in my opinion, now that business is getting cramped space is getting very valuble.

Shops, 9 times out of 10, end up abandoned in a matter of a few weeks.. Mainly due to this being minecraft, where it's rare that someone would buy something unless he can't get it himself.
No point in tearing something down either, if you want more room: expand.
Yeah, We have found there to be next to no point in having a business district. Always ends up abandoned and un-used.
fair point guys, i am definitely gonna keep my shop though as its needed for my business district.
I agree. Even before 1.0, I had people building right next to my shop, which kind of made me upset. I think I was the first person to make a shop there.
I, for one, vote for no business district on the next possible spawn layout. Because, as Mr Flighty and Mr Aco already mentioned too, that's nothing but a waste of space in form of abandoned buildings.
Im not too sure about getting rid of it completely as shops such as mine, droid's restaurant and the hotel are still getting used albeit not a lot but they're new businesses. Maybe the could be a rule in which shops abandoned must be destroyed?
The shops in real world aren't divided from residential areas. There should just be certain sized plots, with neat walkways between then, and it's up to you what you build on your plot.
Destroying other peoples builds is wrong, to begin with. Outside of few certain occasions, that is.
Also, fueling Ninjanpirate's idea more, how about if there were a trade board at forums, on which people could post what they've got on sale, and what they can buy? I think that could work.
Yeah kinda like i did with my shop, mind you some shops need a base of ops but i like the idea of the shops and houses mixed together that could definitely work and would look very nice.
A trading centre would be good. A small hall with boards for people selling stuff. That would probably work better.
However we have had well over a year worth of business districts. And only one shop really worked on the server and that was Asta.
The only problem with the trading hall is that people need a lot of signs to use in order to display all the prices, it would be a definite idea for consideration, should we take a poll on it? Oh and what was asta's shop?
I vaguely remember it, it was on the old map.It was by oldspawn
thats why i tried to build the museum not too close to spawn
The problem with the trading hall, as powelly correctly identified, is the extensive use of signs to display all the information. I get bored reading the rules board, and that is essential reading, so I really CBA to read 120 signs on a wall detailing what different people have to sell.
I like the business district. I like the idea of somebody being the chief buyer/seller of a certain product, and for their prices to be published in their own shop. That way, if i'm interested in buying some potions, I go to the potion store to check the prices. If I'm interested in buying wool, I go to the wool store to check their varieties.
Yes, the business district often becomes abandoned, but as long as the owner of a shop is still selling the product advertised there, I think it is still worth keeping it.
Well said tanpeel i agree we want spawn town to be like a real town and having shops is good and fun. Maybe we should make a poll on it and let people decide.

On the previous map, I was planning on building a huge shopping mall. A large structure (sort of like an indoor city) that housed only shops. The idea was that instead of having shops scattered around the spawn area, people could just come to the mall to seek out shops.
If (or rather, when) we relocate spawn, we could go some direction away from it and build this Shopping Mall, if there is interest for it. Then we could simply link a rail line directly to it from spawn for easy access (of course there'd be warp(s) too).
Edit: If there's interest, I can easily take up project management on this one. I already have ideas spinning around in my head.
Thats a great idea kahr id definitely help with that!
Yeah, I'd Happily Go with that.
