Preface: I may be an idiot.
Ever since 1.2.2 or 1.2.3 (not precisely sure) I have been unable to get a traditional mob trap (dark room variety) to work on our server. Identical traps I build in creative and single-player modes work like normal, just not on the server. One caveat, I *did* get a single skeleton to spawn 2 weeks ago. That was the last one.
I've read and heard conflicting things around the internet. Mobs don't spawn above 240 (disproven in creative mode), light bugs (true bug, but fixed by placing and removing new blocks in the right locations), mobs don't spawn on user-placed blocks (disproven in both creative, single-player, and server with the last skeleton), must be at least 24 blocks away (true, always) and no further than 40 blocks (mobs will still spawn up to 144 but don't move).
In regards to mobs not spawning on user-placed blocks, I tested that on the server. You can very nicely create cobble or stone floors using lava and water. Either method still yielded no success.
So what's going on? Has anyone else had this problem? Does the difficulty setting on the server affect how many and often mobs will spawn?
it would explain why you dont find many mobs in caves anymore.
I have a hunch it has something to do with mobspawners, if theres a limit on how many mobs can be spawned on 1 map
There are no restrictions on mobs spawning, only mob spawners.
