Okay could not find any details on here yet about the new winter world, thought I would start a thread for people to discuss it.
Here is what I think I know about it
1. It's cold, you need light, if you don't have light you die.
2. If you get caught in a blizzard you go blind and die.
3. You die a lot .
4. No locks, kits or other bukkit stuff to help you not die.
5. When you die you return to Vanilla spawn?
6. It costs 50 Emerald to go there and die.
I haven't had the guts yet to go there and feel it is a little expensive considering how easy it is to die and would like to get more details before I dip my toe.
Anyone who has been there add more details please.
thanks
Your analysis is correct.
Is it 50 emeralds every time you go or every time you go in after you've died?
I.e. if you go in, leave without dying and then go back in do you get charged both times?
Sounds about right to me.
I have been twice and though I was doing quite well the second time, still died. I have now spent 100 emeralds, and will not be going in again for a while, I think its somewhat over priced.
In my humble opinion I think perhaps 10 emeralds would be a fairer price.

Every time you enter Winter world via the portal you are charged 50 emeralds.
Digging snow can retrieve goodies but it can also turn out badly as sometimes it will explode and other times it may spawn mobs on you.
If you get caught in a blizzard you will get teleported 500 blocks away and yes you probably will die.
Fire spread and creeper damage are both on so plan your buildings carefully. Stone is a good block to use as its fairly resilliant against explosions but not indestructable. Plus its fairly cheap.
Tips on survival:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kit wise, have a full set of armour, preferably diamond as it will take a beating. Losing armour will mean you will get cold alot more regularly and because of that you will suffer.
Without armour though, your best chances of survival are to not stop sprinting and try to get to light sources as much as possible.
Other gear you should have is a light source i.e torchs, glowstone, flint and steel. Light sources will also stop snow from building up outside your building so they're good for creating paths etc, but they are also key to survival as without them, you will freeze to death (effectively). Darkness = cold so try to stay in light areas as much as you can. If you are moving through dark areas move as fast as you can.
Milk. Milk is extremely useful as it ill counter the effects of the 'cold' (wither) thus improving your chances of survival
Food. For obvious reasons take food with you. The more the better.
Shovel. This is a vital tool as it will allow you to dig the snow without getting effected by the snow. As the snow builds up alot in the game (hence the massive glaciers which have appeared) you will need a shovel to clear out snow around your homes or to create a path.
Weaponry. Your sword will be needed alot in this world as groups of mobs will randomly spawn on you. This ranges from silverfish to creepers. And skeles to blazes so your going to be fighting for you life alot.
Enderchest. Because deadbolt isn't enabled in winter world, when setting up a base use an ender chest to store any valuables. You can also use it for safe transportation of valuables, so i would very highly recommend using one of these.
A few things to avoid.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Water: Being in water greatly increases your chances of getting cold so avoid standing in it at all costs.
When mining be careful of stone. You maybe now thinking what a silly thing to say, but sometimes when mining stone it will explode. Sometimes it will do very minimal damage. Sometimes (as i have experianced) it can kill even when you are wearing full diamond armour. A little trick here is to mine at arms reach so if it does explode you have minimised the damage as much as you can.
Minecarts. Don't bother with these. We've had the bright idea to use these as quick transport about but while in one even when your sat right next to a torch you will get cold no matter what, so they're not worth it.
Benafits of the world:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok it may sound like an umpleasant place. Well it is, so you maybe wondering why on earth you'd want to go there. Well no matter what you either have to be desperate or just plain daft. But there are some very nice benafits of the world.
For a start, ore rates are increased across the world (Yippie). So mining is nice and profitable.
Also digging snow can give you some very nice drops. These include diamond blocks, diamond boots, 500 levels of xp, nether stars and snow, which all mean that the world can be very profitable and is why it is priced at 50 emeralds. Yesterday i made around roughly 60 diamonds quite casually from the world as well as several nether stars, so in turn it was a profit overall.
Another nice thing about the world is the lack of kitting and warps. Yeah i know i sound crazy for saying it but its good to go back to super vanilla minecraft with a horrible twist. It makes you think more about what you're doing and due to the environment means you dont want to travel too far away from spawn as you will not be able to get back.
Just abit of a warning:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do not use beds to bypass the portal as it shows up in chat if you do, and you WILL be fined with the potential for a warning after repeat attempts.
Anyway happy huntings folks and i hope this has clarified some things
Is there any way this information can be put in a sub forum because it is EXTREAMLY useful and possibly along with some suggestions as I'm sure in time this topic will become lost along with the important information thanks to Q.
More information;
Glow stone if left exposed to the air will turn to cobblestone.... about 5 stacks I just wasted.
sounds like that any light sources left in the open seem to disappear or change. Wern't you saying dyonima that in your house you were building that the torches disappeared?
Yeah, if left uncovered in the snow the torches disappear.
I used to place a slab above torches to avoid them disappearing. It works but doesn't really help because over time it all gets covered with snow and simply vanishes.
The only thing snow doesn't fall/stick on seems to be nether brick on fire and glass.
Unrelated: i'm currently very unsure about risk/reward with winterworld. Digging snow is really fun with all those surprises but overtime i just died too often. So winterworld cost me several sets of d-armor already and a lot of emeralds. Didn't really get anything out, yet. Got 3 or so diamond blocks, very nice, but the lost armor sets alone were probably ~90 diamonds. What do others think about the risk/reward relation?
In don't think there should be a cost to get there, seems to be enough potential to loose a lot of gear/xp without the need to pay with emeralds for the privilege (which are hardly abundant in themselves). I also think the shop should go back to gold, not sure why it was switched, makes the shop much less useful IMO. I had a load of gold in chests and now it is basically worthless.
it was changed because the vanilla and tekkit markets are linked, so it means there are far too many ways of getting gold. emeralds were designed as a currency anyway so it makes sence to use them as one.
After the update in winter world item drops seem less common and with the 30 second wither effect i've found its just too unpleasant a place to be in, because your chances of survival are much lower now, and for the lower rate of good drops its barely worth it. There were a group of us playing it right from the go and enjoying it alot. Ok all the risks were still there and you had to be very wary. But now its just unpleasant and it feels as though there is no reason to go outside as you will quite likely get a 30 second wither and that'll be the end of you. Even if you do have milk you'll need so much of it its just not funny.
These are just my opinions though.
Firstly I believe the change to emeralds was a good desolation and makes CFUK flow better with vinilla minecraft as emeralds are the currency of the game and gold does have other uses but we where informed about the change so yes it is unfortunate you have lots in a chest but not really something you can complain about.
On to winter world at this moment in time I also believe the rewards are too low, the best thing I've got from about 1000 blocks of snow around 10 deaths and 2 full sets of good enchanted diamond amour sword and very good bows is 4 stacks of tnt( which I could have kitted in the time spent there) and 1 neather start, which I also could have made in the normal way easier.
But now tekkit only people cant buy items
They can buy, i dont think they can sell and cannot withdraw
so broonie's statement "same rules as normal world" still applies? Good to hear that.
As for snow digging: if you try to keep the top layer intact just digging the snow below it - it gets a lot easier. Basically just caving below the snow top. All the glowstone/torches stay intact. You'll still get the usual surprises from breaking blocks but you have a safe environment around you.
Safer*
Nothing is safe there.
do the blocks of snow regenerate?
it's constantly snowing and Broonie made the snow stack over time, so yes, snow does regenerate up to max height.
