Hey all,
when FTB Unleashed first started out here on CF-UK we had the issue with the advanced information panels which required a map reset.
Then it was running fine for a while but now another major issue seems to appear. Whatever it is exactly but it definitly seems to cause a lot of crashes.
So i'd like to start the question: is unleashed really worth it? For myself i'm already thinking of switching to vanilla or ultimate again.
What do you guys think?
In a way unleashed is worth it because it gathers a lot of attention off people who like that type of game play. But I don't think it's worth running the server if it constantly crashes.
For me, I dont really have another place to go back to.
I HATE gregtech, or most tech to begin with and vanilla just isn't quite as interesting for me.
I understand if it goes down however, the person it needs to be worth it for is broonie, not us.
I personally will stay with both Unleashed and Crazy Fools. Even with all the crashes it is still playable, well unless Broonie scraps Unleashed then I will go back to Ultimate. I Don't have anything against GregTech so could go back to Ultimate if I had to.
I really do love unleashed however furthering to broonies frustration it doesn't look like there will be a fix for another month or so maybe longer as the FTB team are concentrating on GUI design for the launcher and marketing events. Unfortunately this leads us back to adrens question.
Worth it or not?
The final descision is up to broonie of course as he's the one having to tear his hair out trying to fix it. To be honest at this time after finding out what FTB is up to. I'd say scrap it.
we could always try a custom modpack but of course some of the older stable mods dont work with 1.5 onwards. This is leading back to the old tekkit days when we were stuck on 1.2.5 waiting on the modders releasing their work.
If i recall correctly custom modpacks were turned down before due to the high amount of downloading involved.
I wish FTB would hurry the crud up with that new launcher, or not make modpacks ready for a launcher thats not going to be ready for several months, say, 1.8.
D20 modpack or unhinged are other popular options on 1.5.2. Don't know exactly how different they are but should be more stable.
But I agree with Draze for now, while I really love Unleashed it is not worth keeping if it gives Broonie so much trouble.
unhinged is basically just new tekkit without galacticraft. It's GT's version and tbh would ****off too many players including myself. As for D20 i'm not entirely sure.
Right Unhinged is out of the question then. I need to snoop around with D20 to see how stable it is. I googled it a bit and it seems to have a bit less mods than Unleashed, that may help a somewhat. However I am worried that the whole FTB is very busted at the moment with some major problems with the Forge or something.
Also like hell I am not going back to Tekkit Main (the new tekkit) it is beyond boring and unbalanced.
Personally (so far) I'm quite enjoying FTBu as I find the Gregtech recipies in FTB a real pain in the butt! - especially as I don't often get the time to go online and play as much these days (hence it takes me ages to get the "basics" set up).
If the FTBu server can be made more stable (either via mods being updated or cutting out certain mods / items) then I say keep it. But if Broonie can't fix it (or fixes the lastest problem) and it starts crashing again - scrap it - it's obviously an unstable mod.
One thing everyone's forgotten so far is the Fekkit server. Ok there's not much in a way of mods, but there's enough in there to keep people entertained - and I've never seen it crash. Perhaps a custom Fekkit server with some extra mods in it might be an idea (basically, have a trial period - add a few mods, if all's ok, add a few more and try again, etc.).
At the end of the day, as a lot of you lot have said, it's up to Broonie as he's the one that has all the hard work to do (wish I could help, but I really wouldn't know where to start!)
Pretty much. technically we could create a custom CFUK modpack complete with the mods we all chose and broonie confirms as stable. This would take quite some time to get right though.
I am quite in love with Feed the Beast, although only scratched the surface on Unlimited and Unleashed (last map). I have a beautiful plot of land on this server, but I have not done too much with it yet (other then perfect my piston door design).
would it be worth the time to try and disable a few mods/blocks to try and limit/stop the crashes, as imo 1 month is reasonably short term (thats if an update happens in said month).
It really depends whats causing it. said mod could be something which is quite tangled into world gen code. Or it's rewritten something like the redstone coding.

IMO, I don't want to waste my time again to have the map reset for a 3rd / 4th or 5th time because something is corrupting it. I have read that the corrupt worlds could be caused by resources not been available and causing server crashes where the world is not saved correctly, maybe a memory leak eating up all the ram or something. I am however wondering why CF is not just rolling back to a backup rather than resetting the map? To come back after building so much to find the map has simply been reset (again) was not funny.....

Don't know why the map reset was neccessary but i'm quite sure broonie had a good reason for it. And not something as easy as cpu/mem ressources. You underestimate broonie's abilities here.
But yeah it's really a bad feeling to have to start all over again.
*edit* One thing i miss so far is possible consequences of the map reset. Like, some items/mods that are banned now? Some things to avoid?
With no way to know if anything we do will last, I have little faith in Unleashed at the moment. However, if it were stabalized, I would play here with no problems as I like the mod pack, (dartcraft mostly).
Side whine..... I WOULD like to see Darfcraft updated though, so the sticks work again.
It's strange that there are soo many problems with unleashed when it was billed as "more" stable than ulti because of reduced gregtech conflicts.
I would give serious thought to the direwolf20 pack if it was me; very similar mods and also it's not like it can be less stable. Plus realistically direwolf assembled it himself and he runs multiplayer servers etc so if something wasn't working he'd skype the ftb team directly and grumble.
D20 does have all the mods I care about in Unleashed, so to me this would be a viable option. So far I've player recreated D20 packs a few times (before FTB came into play) and never found them too unstable unless angering my golems by taking their stuff.

Here is a mod comparison between Unleashed and D20, for reference.
Atm we are running Unleashed 1.1.3. The ftb team already released version 1.1.4 would that be worth a try? I tryed to check the changelog but the changelog provided by the ftb team is laughable; one would have to check each mods changelog.
Mods in Unleashed but not in D20:
Advanced Power Management
Advanced Solar Panels
BackTools - client side only
Damage Indicators
DartCraft
DenPipes
DenPipes-Emerald
DenPipes-Forestry
Extra Trees
Flat Signs
Gate Copy
MPSaddons
Thaumic Tinkerer
Mods in D20 but not in Unleashed:
ExtrabiomesXL
Hats
HatStand
Translocator
That would be a lot of loss for only a little gain to switch to D20. I prefer unleashed, even with the current growing pains. I've just accepted that for awhile this shiny new toy of Unleashed will have issues, and anything I do there may be wiped.
Just to throw a spanner in the works ... but has anyone noticed that since the server's RAID failed and was replaced (unfortunately resulting in ANOTHER reset of the map), Ultimate seems to be stable at this point in time. Possible corrupt segments on the old RAID leading to corrupted files? - hence the crashes?
Unleashed you mean. But yeah agreed apart from one hiccup earlier where the connection or server dropped out causing a 5 minute rollback effect. Unless that was you Broonie. Apart from that it's been extremely stable on the FtB ultimate type level.
