Umbrella&OiNkTech PMCM division - special announcement - Taint
It has come to my attention that some players are not familiar what taint can look now in FTB Monster and how harmful for the server it can possibly be so I decided to point out a few things..
Manifestation:
Taint can now look black, gray, dark green or purple (those are ones we encountered so far). Black can be seen easily especially because grass becomes black too, green one usually manifest itself as weird web looking thing on top of grass (kinda like a spider web, but not quite..if it looks odd, it's probably taint). It's almost always near those obsidian totems.. Best way to make sure is to do F3 and if u see under biome that it says: Earie biome, you've got taint..
EDIT: This is not always the case, as Squaffle mentioned, it should say "Tainted" in biome part when you F3, but there's still a high chance of taint in Earie biome and near totems..
If you are doing Thaumcraft, make sure to use goggles or thaumometer to see if u have a "Sinister" node..
Mobs:
You might also encounter animals with purple tint, usually mutated one eye or more, that will try to kill anything in their sight.. This is a sure sign they have walked over some taint in their vicinity.. If you are seeing huge purple tentacles, call me, I need more for my collection.. (or go see a Dr.) ...actually so we don't get some misunderstandings, those do exist and will also try to kill you if you get near them.. (there are a few more taint specific creatures such as purple slimes and taint spiders that burst out of their cocoons..)
Containment:
To fight taint, destroy the totem if there is one or a node that has purplish or black tint (better just smack any node that's near as it may cause it to spread further)
then plant Ethereal Blooms in a circle around it (they have an 8 block radius for cleansing) and when they finish one part, start moving them closer to the center until all taint is gone.
You don't have to craft the blooms, they are abundant in Rainbow forests or could be found in dungeon chest.. Also other members will gladly help you clear it.. If you are using Optifine, you probably can't see the blooms, you would have to disable it or they will stay invisible.
Consequences:
Taint can cause server crashes, corrupt a chunk, make a need for a rollback and many other errors (most common one is "Buffer overflow" error that constantly disconnects players near taint)
and most of these problems manifest them selves when there are 2 or more players near it..
So if you are playing alone you might not notice, but first time someone gets close to you you could and probably will experience problems..
Please deal with your taint accordingly and ask for help if you need it..
It will benefit us all.
Thank you for listening!

as an edit alex, Eerie biomes aren't tainted at all, they're just made by the totems; you'll see "tainted" under f3 if it's taint. Last map, I lived in an eerie area and no taint. I live near a totem now and there's no taint. All it means is there's a slightly higher chance for taint to stay/spawn than normal.
Saying that I would still however agree with the recommendation to kill the totem; better safe than sorry.
As a reiteration of alex's post BEWARE ANYTHING PURPLE AND SQUISHY
Thats probably cos you live semi-close to a tainted patch soul... just slightly south of me xD Intersects with a magical forest =S

-----X-----
transmission start..
..tainted mob hunting drones incomplete..
..set for auto-release after AI core's are tested as stable and "reliable"..
..no humans will be harmed in the process..
..hopefully..
#2*- tainted mob brain control chips tested as semi-reliable.. 85% complete..
..ending transmission

@Squaffle - will edit post as suggested
edit: another thing worth mentioning.. Rainbow trees really don't get along with taint or evil nodes..
I planted one on top of Thaumcraft dungeon (which has a sinister node in) and as soon as it grew, it made me crash and get errors, so I couldn't log on until Piggles removed it completely..

The problem is the biome changing algorithm.
-rainbow trees change the biome around them into rainbow forest.
-Sinisters change the biome around them into Earie.
-silverwoods change the biome around them to become Magic Forest
-Taint changes the inflicted area to "tainted"
Announcers voice: "BIOME BATTLE! COMMENCE!"
EDIT: restructured post for readability. there is probably more that changes the biomes, but im pretty sure the conflict of two or more things vying for the intended biome of a chunk is the problem after some testing.
i think silverwood (magic forest) vs taint isn't an issue (would need to test) but this is probably handled by some aura node logic inside thaumcraft, probably the same can be said for sinisters.
rainbow forest on the other hand.... is pure evil!

Thuamcraft interrelations are not a problem. rainbow trees near any of these however...
sort of explain the abundance if the no-taint flowers as a workaround to the... unsolved issue.
