Yeah, I'm almost starting to think that as well. It's only in Beta still, so this is the time for Notch to try things out and toss them before the final version (If there ever will be) if they don't settle well with the people.
Not entirely sure on what I'll think of it, so I guess I'll have to wait and see.
I'm concerned of the RAM and CPU usage and all the leaks.
Gaaaaah.
We'll trial them out if its a Minecraft added feature.
Now that you put it like that...I must say I agree!
Hmm minecart contraptions you say? Interesting.
believe me davh27, it will be all good. notch doesnt add random Griefers to the game.
What concerns me is the pathfinding ability. Mobs are pretty stupid, when they see you, the run towards you, ignoring everything on the ground, so they run into deep pits, water, lava lakes, rushing water streams, glass walls, etc. I hope the wolves have a better pathfinding ability, and can managed to keep up with the player as he/she navigates through some tricky landscapes. I hate to imagine some of your wolf pack getting killed just because you walked across a bridge over a deep pit, or some of your wolves getting suck on the other side of a 2 block high wall, when there is a step over that ledge just a few blocks away.
One thing I've always hated in games that give you a 'companion' that follows you around.... having to babysit them to keep them alive till you reach the next fight, where they might actually help you out in some way. Fallout3 seems to have solved that issue somewhat, so its not impossible to implement, I just have my doubts about how well it will be implemented by Mojang in the first wolf-enabled release.
They could implement a teleport feature, like they have in some two player "couch" games. When a player gets too far behind, they would just teleport ahead to the other player.
Something like that may solve getting stuck behind a wall, while you went up the stairs.
