I just downloaded the old map from the "file collection" section...
How do I play it?

Download and unzip the files for the map into a folder in your minecraft directory. In Windows 7, the directory is this:

C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\saves

under that folder, create a new folder called "World X" where the X is a number higher than any of your other single player save game folders.

Once you have extracted all the files into that Wold X folder, launch Minecraft and go to single player, select the World X save game, Minecraft will then tell you it needs to convert the save to the new file format. It doesn't take too long, just let it convert, then you can play it.

I have a similar problem except when I add .zip to the file and try to extract it, it wants a password, I tried various passwords but nothing works and hence cannot extract it.

I tried both Password and password among a dozen other that I could think up, in all cases the password was rejected.

It doesn't work for me...
I run Minecraft on a Mac, and the file, when downloaded, is just a really long text file of code (I think?). I put in in a Worldx folder, and it didn't show up in the Minecraft singleplayer list.

You have to add .zip to the end of the file, it has no extension. Then you have to extract/unzip the file using the password CrazyFoolsUK.

Once unzipped you'll see a World folder, rename the World folder with a number, eg.. World4 and copy it to your saves folder.

If you already have one named that, etc.. just use the next number up that isn't taken and you should then see it in Minecraft.

The one that's posted under file collection is the temporary map used while the old map was down and so isn't corrupted as far as I know.
