Re: An Ethical Question... (Minecraft General) Posted on 26 Apr : 21:07
Long story short, If we provide the files, then there are two problems.

1) Due to the license, nobody but notch & his company can redistribute minecraft.

2) [completely ignoring #1], we became a supplier for the software, and responsible for what it does to other's machines. Especially important, since somehow (most likely through a client mod), someone gathered a bunch of minecraft usernames/passwords). also, remember the story of mcadmin, where the programmer had the power to op himself on any server he connected to (could just as easly did a "delete home directory" command.

Re: Why? (Minecraft General) Posted on 11 Mar : 07:56
most games, you are a visitor in the world.

I have never played WOW, but from my understanding, you login, kill a few things, or do a quest, and leave. Once you are gone, you have had no impact on the world.

minecraft, is a grinding based game. You build, and you sculpt. You make your mark upon the world, for all to see when you log off.

wonder what WOW would be like, if you could go into the wilderness, and build a house...

Re: minecraft for linux - only works w/ oracle/sun's java (Minecraft General) Posted on 28 Feb : 22:38
eep, I was wrong. Turns out I did not have permission to do opengl with my user (video group in /etc/groups). Ignore me.
Thread: minecraft for linux - only works w/ oracle/sun's java (Minecraft General) Posted on 28 Feb : 21:52
I heard a couple people playing with this, and I have confirmed their findings. Minecraft does not run w/ IcedTea/OpenJDK. If you wish to play under linux, you will need sun/oracle's jdk.

This is the error you receive when you try to run it

Re: issues (Server Discussion) Posted on 26 Feb : 22:26
well, if they had a roundrobin system, of something like 5x authentification servers on a rrdns...

after you submit name/passwd, they send you an authentification id, or something, as well as the ID of the login server, pass that onto the server, and it know's who you logged in with.

of course, still have to keep the login credentials the same between all servers... so a few technical things to work out

Linux LFS (www.linuxfromscratch.org)
Windows 7 Professional x64 (Mostly unused)
AMD Phenom II X4 945
4GB DDR3
Seagate 7200.12 1TB Drive for data
OCZ Velocity II SSD 40GB for linux OS
Seagate 7200.10 320GB drive for windows
GA-890GX-UD3H (Using integrated graphics, Radeon 4290)
- Using Mesa 7.10 Opensource Drivers
2x monitors (21" and a 19")

also have a Asus EeePC 1008HA, beautiful machine.

Network:
-Asterisk (Voip Server) running on a Linksys WRT54G
-Polycom IP501 SIP phone
-Linksys PAP2, let's me plug in 2 normal phones into my voip system.

oh, and I use openbox as my main desktop on linux. Almost instant performance smile

Design:
- I wanted something low power, and quiet, but a kick where it matters.
- Mostly use it for software compiling, occassionally 3d opengl programming.

Wishlist:
- 890FX motherboard
- another 4GB Ram
- Radeon 6870
- 3rd monitor w/ displayport
- Netbook w/ AMD Fusion Processor

Mostly buy things that give you a good bang for your buck, I think that rig cost under $500 altogether.
