Thread: An Ethical Question... (Minecraft General) Posted on 26 Apr : 09:09
I was thinking about this the other day, and I wondered what your opinions were.

In the event that we have a Minecraft update, but the server doesn't update, meaning that players who have updated their client and not backed up their bin/ folder cannot get on the server, we always say "Do not distribute files," as the client itself tells us.

What I wondered is, what does it matter?

Unless there's a way of playing Minecraft without logging in to the Minecraft server that I'm not aware of (entirely possible), then me distributing my Minecraft files is only useful to people who have paid for Minecraft and have a Minecraft.net account, ie: people who have a legitimate right to play the game.

I'm sure it's possible to hack the game to play without logging in, but people who do that hardly need to rely on someone giving them the files to do it.

I realise there's an element of covering ones behind in stating that you do not endorse the distribution of copyrighted files but, personally, I don't see what harm it would do in this situation.

Anyway, I wanted to know y'all's thoughts on the subject are, and, if there's a technical reason why it WOULD do harm that I am clearly missing, feel free to enlighten me.

7 iron per stack of cobble seems a little steep. I've been giving the stuff away!
Re: Failed to Connect (Server Discussion) Posted on 23 Apr : 09:50
I'd been working on my mobtrap for about 3 days, and had only to remove 4-5 torches and place 2 glass blocks to complete it when the server went down!

Now, due to DIY, birthday parties and bbq's, I probably won't be online again until Tuesday!

I may cry.

Also, I lost 500 cobble in the server rollback. I want a refund.

You mean I have to go back to REAL life?

You know Aconan said, like two lines after you mentioned you were going to post this on the forum, not to bother posting it on the forum?

He said he'd PM'd Broonie, and I wouldn't be surprised if the server going down was Broonie up to something.

Has anyone played a game called Scribblenauts?

I want Minecraft to take a page from their book in the future, and go crazy with the items and combinations that you can use/make.

I want to see things like edible plants, multiple drop possibilities (eg: sheep dropping wool or mutton), more combinations of things to craft (eg: obsidian tools/armour) and more items (eg: lanterns).

All in all, I think Minecraft is the kind of game that you should NEED a manual (or a wiki open in the background) because there's so much stuff to know.

Also, more mobs of all kinds would be nice.

Oh, and optimising it. I'm not a programmer, so I don't know, but it seems odd that a game like Minecraft can make my laptop, which can run a game like Fallout 3 or Full Ace Tennis with ease, occasionally struggle with a screen full of cubes textured in 16x16 textures... maybe it's a java thing?

Gotta be honest, I won't be around.

I've been addicted to Minecraft for the past month (my first) and can't see it abating in the near future. But, during November, the entirety of my gaming time will be taken up by the likes of Arkham City, Mass Effect 3, and Skyrim.

In all honesty, though, can any of you see the final release being dramatically different to the release before it? Majong have been releasing small, incremental updates for some time now, and even if they save something special for the final release, I don't think it'll be a big deal to people like us, who will have been playing it for 10 months prior.

I haven't been part of this community for long, but I think I've been here long enough to get the sense of humour you people have.

I expect this request would get you a screenshot of 4 lines of code.

Yup, we have a giant pig.

This thread was very helpful. I (accidentally) started a town (two towns's, really) and there's around six or seven of us at the moment, and more people are showing interest. I can see this becoming an issue in the future.

Although, the giant pig will always be there!
